Chapter #5Team Foxfire on their First Adventure! by: crossblade The steady hold slumber had on you was slowly shaken away by the constant bickering of your charmeleon partner. “I said get UP, lazybones! We’re gonna dock at that new village in, like, just a couple hours from now!” He complained, shaking you back and forth on the bed until, eventually, you can’t even ignore it.
“Urghrgh…” You let out a long, tired groan as you stretch out on the bed, yawning as you scratch your side, not even bothering to open your eyes. After all, the sun hasn’t even come up yet. “Willis… I’m tryin’ to conserve energy… for all that… adventuring we’re going to do…”
“And what? Are you just gonna sleep in and not get up in time for breakfast?” The thought of missing breakfast was enough to finally spur you to open your eyes, and bring your lazy, lethargic body crawling out of bed. “Yeah, that’s what I thought! Now get ready!” The charmeleon chuckled, as he had toward your quarter’s bathroom.
The ship you were on rocked gently in the waves as you brushed your teeth in the bathroom. Meanwhile, Willis was doing pull-ups at the door to get his blood pumping for the morning - something you used to do, too, but since, you’ve started to develop a bit too much… weight. “Heh! Can’t manage a single pull-up anymore, Oliver? Guess you really need to lay off the lava cookies~” He giggles, poking your tummy and causing it to wobble slightly.
“Makin’ fun of a Pokemon’s pudge is a good way to end up adding to it, you know…” You growl grumpily, your eyes half-lidded and making it clear that you were too tired to put up with anything this morning.
“Sorry to disappoint, Oliver, but you’ve gotta have two to make a team! So you’re stuck with me~” He leans forward and teases, only making you give him another sleepy glare. You’d never actually eat him, of course. Willis has been your best friend since you were little kids. You both trained hard so you could join the guild together. Of course, the fact that you knew eachother so well meant that he knew exactly how to annoy you…
Up on the main deck, the two of you settled in for breakfast along with dozens of other guild members, as the sun rose in the distance. “Man, I’m so excited, I like, can’t stop shaking!” Willis smiled widely at you, seeming to be rather cutely anxious for the day ahead. “Our very expedition… our very first missions… we’re gonna be real adventurers!”
You nodded inbetween bites of your breakfast. Indeed, your hometown had been visited by the guild previously, and the two of you had spent months training for it, trying to become part of its ranks. Luckily, you both managed to qualify for membership right before the massive ship sailed away again, on its way to some place known as Juniper Town.
“Mhmm! I mean, unless we get eaten by bandits or something…” You chuckle, in a much better mood now that you’ve had some time to wake up and eat.
Later still, the moment’s finally arrived. You all crowd onto the top deck of the ship, the day bright and the wind rippling through your fur, as you all cheer as the new lands finally come into view over the horizon! “Juniper Town…!” You gasp in awe, finally laying eyes on the beautiful, advanced little town built among countless hills, valleys and forests, looking completely in tune with the wonders of nature.
As the guild members all docked as the hulking ship approached the land, their focus shifted to the sound of the captain’s quarters loudly sliding open. Indeed, emerging was a massive, powerful, pudgy Blastoise, Walton - the captain of the exploration guild! You’d only ever seen Walton just a few times, and you were always in total awe of him! Everyone cheered when he walked out, which he tolerated for a while, before raising a hand, causing everyone to fall silent immediately.
“... so. After seven months on our previous expedition, and three weeks at sea, we are finally approaching a new land. A new town. A new fresh start,” he began, in a deep, authoritative voice. “To the Pokemon here, we are not a mere organization. We are a symbol of hope. And this must be the image we cultivate. While you shall be paid fairly for every mission completed, you mist remember your main goal is not profit, but working to ensure a hopeful future for every innocent Pokemon.”
“Juniper Town - the town you see before you - is a place that needs this hope. Rain isn’t falling, crops aren’t growing, and if this continues, Pokemon might start to go hungry in just a few months. Was it nor for us, it seems likely that this beautiful forest land would just dry up into a sprawling desert. But we’re not gonna let that happen, are we?” He asks, the corners of his lips curling up into a grin.
“Sir, no, sir!” The guild members all shout in unison.
“ Whatever’s causing this, we’re gonna track it down, kick its butt, and give these Pokemon a future worth looking forward to. Am I right?” He asks, louder.
“Sir, yes, sir!” Echoes across the sea.
“I thought so! Now we’re gonna try and make a good first impression immediately upon landing. Diamond Rank teams and above, focus on meeting and interacting with civilians. They’ll have heard legends of your adventures, so you’ll be like heroes to them. Gold rank teams and below, focus on solving whatever small little problems they need you to deal with. Prove to them that we’re here to help! My first in command, Tobias, shall lead your efforts. Have I made myself clear?” He raises a brow.
“Sir, yes, sir!” Everyone shouts one last time, loud enough to make their throats hoarse. With that, the satisfied blastoise returns to his quarters, and Tobias,a rather large and well-dressed vaporeon, trotted out.
As you all get to work, you glance down at your badge…
Team Foxfire
Oliver & Willis
Normal Rank
You sighed, always having wondered why it was called ‘normal rank’ when it was really just delegated to complete newbies. Hopefully, though, if you work hard enough, you might be silver ranked by the end of this expedition! indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
