Max sat on the sofa like a silent witness to the storm brewing in his mind. The gravity of his father's revelation felt like a sudden earthquake, shaking the very foundation of his life. Robert—his dad, the man who taught him to ride a bike, the one who had cheered him on at every school event—was involved in something so twisted and dark it seemed surreal.
After the shocking confession, Max had stormed into his room, his heart racing. He stared at his phone, half-tempted to call his friends to vent or to go out and escape this reality for just a little while. But something deep inside gnawed at him—a mix of disappointment, confusion, and an unsettling sense of betrayal.
He could still hear his father's voice in his head, trembling but resolute as he had declared his involvement in illegal activities. The details had churned his stomach: drugs, weapons, human trafficking. Images that had never crossed his mind, stark and horrifying, flashed before him.
His thoughts were interrupted by a faint knock on the door. It swung open to reveal Claudia, his mom, her blonde hair slightly disheveled, the worried look on her face contrasting with her usual composed demeanor. In her hand was a glass of dark whiskey, the ice clinking like a distant warning bell.
“Max,” she began, taking a seat beside him on the bed. “Your father has a lot on his mind right now. I—”
Max cut her off before she could finish. “How could he do this, Mom? How could he take part in such…evil stuff?” His voice cracked, revealing the vulnerability beneath the anger. “He was always so…so proud of his business. I looked up to him!”
“I know, honey. I know.” Claudia placed the glass on the bedside table, a tremor in her hand revealing her own distress. “I didn’t have any idea this was happening. Not a single clue. But we need to focus on how to deal with it now.”
