Chapter #7

The Truth Comes Out

"G-gh...I....um..."

With your face flushed red, you stare at your mother with a horrified expression. She seems quite surprised to find you, particularly with a pair of adult-sized diapers.

There were many ways you could play this off but already in the middle of breaking down, you can't seem to stop the brakes in your mind.

Excuses...excuses...what about-

"I-I like them!"

That wasn't an excuse.

That was an admission!

Only seconds after blurting out from sheer pressure, your redden complexion turns pale once you made such a dumb mistake.

Your mother, Jane blinks and is taken aback by your sudden hurried voice; however, there was no mistaking what she heard.

"You...like them?"

Sweat begins pouring down your forehead. Oddly, you feel a little more level-headed after admitting but seeing how your mother seems confused, you quickly try to change the subject.

"I mean, nevermind-What are you doing here? I thought you and dad were supposed to be miles away?"

Jane blinks a few more times and then expresses concern, but she doesn't push. "I was about to call you after this. The lake we were supposed to visit for our anniversary was closed due to a landslide. We had to cancel our plans early."

"O-oh, I see!" you exclaim, laughing forcefully, "...that sucks. I'm sorry for you guys."

Jane smiles sweetly and then caresses you cheek, a maternal habit that you've gotten used to. While embarrassing, being caught was more embarrassing and you couldn't help worry now about what your mother would think.

"Oh sweetie, it is what it is. Since we have some time left with this weekend, maybe we can do something together as a family, hm?"

"Er...yeah, yeah...that sounds good. Um...well, I just got to...pick something up I needed, that's all."

Jane raises an eyebrow, then points at the package of diapers. "This?"

Seeing that somehow you still are holding it, you quickly shove it into the incorrect shelf and reveal your empty hands.

"No, no! I just...took that by accident! I was just going to buy...um...body wash. Yeah, I was running out of some in my shower."

Jane hums, still worried about your behavior. "I thought I bought some last week though?"

"A-anyways!" you force, feeling more crazed the longer you stood with her, "...I'll just head out and meet you guys back home. Go um...continue whatever you were doing. I'll be fine!"

"I...okay? Just take it easy, sweetie. I won't be here for long. Just grabbing some stuff we're missing while your father is waiting inside the car."

"I-I will, see ya!"

Desperate to get out there, you quickly walk away from your mother and stopping at the soap and body wash aisle too, only to grab something to at least match your story.

Jane watches you disappear then looks at the desperately pushed bag of diapers. Only a fool would believe her son wasn't lying. Although she didn't want to make you uncomfortable, it feels like this is hard to ignore. What does she do?
