"Amelia, come downstairs!" Jim called up to her daughter, who was playing in her room. "I got you a new toy to play with!"
Amelia rushed down the stairs. She was a 5-year-old girl, with long ginger hair and had on a plain dress with frills at the bottom. "Oh, thank you! What did you get me?"
Jim pulled out Buttons and handed it to Amelia. "Their name is Buttons. You two play nice now, you hear?"
"Oh, uh... Thanks, Dad." Amelia said, a little less enthusiastic. She took the doll and shook it, unsure of how she felt about it.
"What's wrong? Don't you like it?" Jim asked.
Amelia shrugged. "I don't know, I just... It looks weird."
"It'll grow on you, don't worry. I'm sure you'll become the best of friends soon enough." Jim said, patting Amelia on the head before leaving her to play.

Amelia had put Buttons on a chair, and looked at them for quite a while. Their unblinking gaze and permanent smile just left Amelia feeling somewhat uneasy, yet she couldn't divert her attention away from it. She was scared that if she looked away, it might disappear.
"You're a pretty weird doll, but... I don't wanna make my dad sad. I wonder what we could do together..." Amelia wondered, scratching her chin.
