Chapter #5

A Dedicated Maid

    by: ChairInTheRoom Author IconMail Icon
Move in week for any school with a dedicated dorm was always a hectic process. Hundreds of students and parents with only a vague idea of what to do would descend upon the school in droves, and the result would always been that at least someone would have an issue. That issue would then cause issues for more people, and issues would cascade like a row of dominoes. A school's ability to run this sort of thing was less about if this would happen, and more about how it was handled when it did.

Buttercomb had always been a school with solid organization, so they had a perfectly sound battle-plan going into this years move-in week. When Monday came around, they were ready to accept new and old students with open arms. They were even ready to handle all the complications that the new partnership with the Yeng Corporation may cause.

And yet, when Monday arrived, there wasn't a single backup of issues. Every issue a student or parent had was handled promptly and efficiently. Problems started and ended at the same point, and the day of arrivals ended without a single complaint. It was unprecedented in the history of the school, and was considered a major accomplishment.

Principal Polluck would have been ecstatic, if any of Buttercomb's staff had been responsible for it, but it wasn't. If fact, the sole reason for the days success was due to a student and her parents.

The Marsh family was not a particularly well-known or wealthy family by any means, but those who did know them knew them by the work they'd done for the Yeng corporation. Ever since the corporation's inception, the Marsh family had worked as Yeng's most trusted allies. When Yeng first negotiated with retailers to put their products on shelves, the Marshes sent the invitations and planned the meeting to perfection. When questions were raised about Yeng's activities in Daven's Port, the Marshes planned and executed a fantastic campaign to clear up the rumors. Simply put, when Yeng needed something done, the Marshes handled it. Though, most of the work the Marshes did wasn't so grandiose. Usually they worked as simple butlers and maids, ready to serve the higher-ups at Yeng at any time. Most would call them servants, but the Marshes thought of themselves as something more. They took pride in their work dispute working in what some would call a lowly profession, and they strive to be the best in it.

Since Buttercomb had entered into a partnership with Yeng, the Marshes only saw fit to send one of their own to Buttercomb as a gesture of good will. Their daughter, Carami, had just entered into her high school years and hadn't chosen anywhere to work yet, so was the ideal choice to send. After speaking with Buttercomb's staff, it was decided that Carami would attend as a normal student so that she could spend the next 4 years away from her maid training and experience life as a normal girl. To broaden her horizons, of course.

Mother and father said that they weren't there to get involved with Buttercomb's move-in process, but when they arrived, they couldn't help but spring into action.

"Dear, could you watch everything for me? I want to see what's happening over there." The first to leap into action was my mother, Aya. She was dressed in a casual summer dress at the time, but she still gave off the air of being a maid regardless. Her posture was perfect, yet she wasn't stiff at all. And her sizeable assets made her seem warm and motherly. She was, in many ways, the perfect maid.

"I think I'll go as well. Darling, go find your room, we'll say goodbye when this is all done." Her father wasn't far behind. He was a fairly young looking man in his mid 30s, but he often spoke well outside his years. Were his wife, Aya, was warm and kind, Gunther was wise and always seemed like he planned his next action minutes beforehand. He was slim, but imposing, and always seemed to know the right thing to say.

I just smiled and watched they took over the work for Buttercomb's staff. I wanted to help out too, but I had my own job to do at that moment, which was to arrive at my and make sure my things were safe and secure.

Of course, it didn't take very long. I'd already researched and familiarized myself with the campus, so while all the other students looked in awe at the campus and fumbled through the process, I glided through the process effortlessly. By the time most people would be gaping at the cafeteria, I was already in her room, securing my things. I didn't take any time to look at my room. Instead, I hurried out of it as soon as I was finished. After all, I knew that there were still people that needed help moving in. I rejoined mother and father quickly and set to work helping out the various other students.

It wasn't an easy task. There were many people with a wide variety of issues, but I did the best she could. I wasn't nearly as experienced as they were, so I had to send people over to my mother or father a lot, but part of the job is knowing your limits and sending people to someone they can actually get help from. That, in of itself, is helpful.

The hardest problems to solve were ones related to student disabilities. I'd been warned about this by my parents, but I was still somewhat surprised by how many overweight girls arrived at the school. Most of the kids at my middle school weren't a kilogram over 100, but there were a few students I saw that had to be at least 150. I could only imagine how well those girls must have been eating. It brought a smile to my face thinking that so many parents cared about their kids that much.

We ended up staying and working until everyone was moved into their rooms, it was around 5pm we we finished. A whole 7 hours after we arrived. That sounds rough, and it was, but it was worth it. Seeing everyone happily move into their rooms was reward enough.

Afterwards, my parents and I said our goodbyes. It didn't take very long though. My mother was nice as always, and my father had plenty of advise to give me. When we were done, they walked back to their car, and I started back towards my dorm.

As I walked, I realized that my roommate would be there by now. Naturally, in my research, I'd already found out her name, age, weight, all that stuff, but I'd yet to see a picture of her, or find out what she was like. It was kinda exciting, actually. Usually I find a lot of stuff like this out before had, but this time I didn't really know what to expect. I wanted to find out who I'd be saying with. Hopefully, we could be great friends, and I could keep practicing being a maid with them! I know, I'm not suppose to be working, but I can't help it. It's in my blood, you know?

Eventually, I got to my -- our -- room, and knocked on it out of habit. I heard a voice yell, "come in!" before opening the door.

On the other side was...
