“Isn’t this place quaint?” Paula asked, walking between aisles, her eyes on the various knick-knacks in the thrift shop. Her short, petite frame was shown off well with her floral blouse and blue jeans, and while Paula didn’t have the face of a supermodel, she looked plenty pretty to Jed. He was standing a few feet behind his girlfriend, his eyes on her short brown hair, cut into a bob, trying not to look bored.
It wasn’t that Jed hated shopping, though he kind of did, but this thrift shop trip was eating into their valuable Sunday time. Jed worked weekdays, while Paula’s shifts were from Tuesday to Saturday, so this was the only day they both had off together all week. Not feeling like dressing up, Jed had clad his tall, slim build in an old Star Wars shirt and some old jeans with holes in the knees. They weren’t cut out, he had just tripped a few months ago while wearing them. He ran his fingers through his shaggy brown hair while thinking of a reply. “Yeah, it sure is...something.”
Paula rolled her eyes, but she could see Jed’s point. While it was fun to browse this place, there wasn’t much that she’d actually want to buy. They were both still paying off their car loan and student loans, so money was somewhat tight. She was about ready to leave, when her eyes caught glints of metal on a shelf that piqued her curiosity. Walking closer, Paula saw two old coins on a shelf, one gold, the other silver. They looked gorgeous, but didn’t have any price markers on them. Turning to the shopkeeper, she held the coins up and asked, “How much for these?”
The young woman tending the shop looked over, squinted, and shrugged. “Two bucks each would be fine.”
His interest caught, Jed walked over to see the coins himself, and he too immediately wanted to own them. He looked at Paula and asked, “Do we want both of them, or just one?” indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
