Chapter #3

They are being brainwashed to think they're...

    by: Unknown
"Ugh, what happened" Alan asked groggily as he opened his eyes. He suddenly became stiff as he remembered what had happened, and noticed that he was currently laying on a cold, metalic table.

"Ah, you are awake" Von Strasser said, not lifting his eyes from the machine he was working on. His parents and Megan were all unconscious on neighboring tables. "You will be the one I start with then. Do you have any questions?"

"What... what is this place?" Steve asked, trying to look around, but finding that it took a significant amount of effort to even turn his neck.

Von Strasser frowned, as if disappointed by the question. "This is my lab, child. I would think that much is obvious."

Alan tried to sit up, but was unable to lift himself more than a few inches before collapsing back down on the metal surface.

"My appologies" Von Strasser said, still not looking up from the devise he was working on. "I injected each of you with nanobots just basic enough to limit your motor functions. At the press of a button you will be able to move freely again, but for now this makes things significantly easier. Unfortunately in my old age, my hands aren't good for much more than basic tinkering so I could not tie you up like others might. Besides, I always found that to be crude and risky in an experimental setting. This is better for all of us, trust me."

"What... are you gonna do with us?" Alan asked, trying to get a look at what the mad scientist was working on, but only seeing a headband looking thing.

Von Strasser grinned, apparently getting a more interesting question. "I'm glad you asked, child. I mentioned earlier than I am a professor, yes? Well, I suppose that title is outdated. I recently retired from my post in order to focus on my private research. I don't have much longer left in this world, I'm afraid, but my research is too important not to complete. Alas, I needed test subjects and was just working out how to get them to me when you and your family stumbled on my home. So I owe you all a thank you. As well as an appology. The place has been quite a mess since my beloved Hilda passed away. Though I suppose I can now have some help cleaning."

"You didn't answer the question, you old coot!" Steve yelled from his table, apparently having woken up during the conversation.

"Steve, please be careful!" Janet exclaimed, clearly worried for her husband.

"Mommy, I'm scared" Megan said, her voice cracking from tears on her own table.

Von Strasser finally stopped tinkering and stood up, looking slowly at each of his captives, ending with Steve. "No, I suppose I did not answer the question. You see, my field was mental modification. This device I have in my hand will be placed on your head. It will place your body into a hypnotic trance and make your memories and personality traits appear on my computer screen. I will then be able to edit them as I see fit. I had originally designed this to assist in PTSD treatment, but I simply must see how far it can go. I'd explain in more detail, but something tells me you lack both the patience and the mental capacity to understand. In that case, perhaps it would be for the best to simply begin our experiments together."
