The wires began resonating with the strong energy pumping through them. Although the computer was clearly old and out-of-date, it rattled and hummed with the force of thousands of gigawatts bringing the contraption to life.
Megan screamed and squeezed her eyes shut, while Steve swore loudly, but neither felt any sensation beyond their own fear and anger. Instead, they turned to see Alan and Janet, their expressions and bodies frozen in their last moment of consciousness prior to when Von Strasser pulled the lever. Occasionally, part of their body fidgeted involuntarily: a finger, eye, lip, et cet. Otherwise, they showed no signs of awareness or sensation. The caps on their heads vibrated and made a sound similar to a frozen yogurt machine dispensing its goods.
For at least half a minute this continued, Von Strasser watching with unending glee. Steve and Megan said nothing, transfixed and horrified by the display. Finally, all the machinery grumbled to a halt, steam shooting out from the computer, wires, caps...nearly every part that had been doing work. With the push of a button on the computer, Von Strasser released Alan and Janet from their caps, and their bodies slunk forward, their chests filling with oxygen that had been deprived of them for such a short yet still unbearably long time.
"Speak to me!" Von Strasser proclaimed, grinning maliciously. "Was the psyche relocation process a success? Is this the body you originally had?"
