Chapter #6

Serra's comeuppance brings her down to size

"ERK!!" A loud, shrill, female voice shouted. To anyone not familiar with the members of Eliwood's army, they might think a small animal was shrieking in pain from getting killed. One could be forgiven for thinking such things, as the voice belonging to the always arrogant cleric Serra was quite the ear-hurter at times. But the rest of the camp was mostly used to such shouts from the pink-haired girl, especially when Serra was calling out for Erk, a common victim of her outbursts.

Serra stormed into Erk's tent and, without even giving the poor boy a moment to react to her bursting in, started up again.

"I KNOW you took it from me!" Serra insisted angrily, arms folded, foot tapping impatiently.

"Er, what..?" Erk appeared to be dumbfounded. Here he was, simply organizing his things in his chest, when all of a sudden his charge came charging in without permission.

"Don't play dumb with me!" Serra wagged a finger at Erk, and stomped over to him. She glared down at him, making the boy start to sweat. "You took my staff!"

"I don't know what you're talking about." Erk told her dismissively. He shuffled some things in his item box and then tried to shut it, but before he could get it closed, Serra quickly reached out and pushed to top back open. "Hey!" Erk shouted is dismay, as her sudden movement knocked him to the floor.

"Don't 'hey' me, Erk! I saw it in here just now, you lying thief!" Serra accused him as she rummaged through his things, carelessly tossing out anything that wasn't the staff she was looking for.

"Stop that!" Erk told her. He got up and grabbed the pink-haired girl's sides, and was about to move her, when all of a sudden she shrieked louder then ever.

"Eww! Don't touch me!" Serra cried out rather loudly. She resorted to trying to kick the young mage away from her. Erk gulped, feeling he might've crossed a line that he didn't intend to, and let quickly let go before Serra stirred up a bigger commotion and got some of the others coming in to see what the hell was going on.

"Fine! Fine!" Erk relented at last. Serra stopped her relentless desecration of his items and looked at him expectantly. Erk smirked. "You got me. I've had it all along."

"I knew it! Why would you do something like that? I can't believe even you'd sink so low, why I have half a mind to-" Serra started up again, almost going into a rant about what a thief Erk was before the mage stopped her.

"Yeah, yeah! I get it!" Erk rolled his eyes. Serra shut up, but still was expecting him to help her. Erk sighed, and walked over to his bed.

"It's not in that chest, okay? I hid it under my bed." Erk explained.

"Of all the-" Serra was again going to start up another rant. But like before, Erk was quicker to the punch, as he'd gotten used to his charge's ways.

"Here! Okay!?" Erk bent down and grabbed a silver-coated staff out from under his bed. It was shiny and appeared to still be in mint condition. "I took it to teach you lesson, but I guess that was a dumb idea."

"You're telling me! I have half a mind to teach YOU a lesson!" Serra retorted with a scoff. She frowned and held out her hand for Erk to return her staff back to her. Erk knew he was in the wrong here, despite Serra's attitude, and hesitantly walked over to her to give back what was rightfully hers.

"You know, I was hoping this would make you a LITTLE more humble, or maybe give a MINISCULE amount of thought about how you treat your friends. But, I guess I was wrong, it's going to take more then this to cut that attitude of yours down to size." Erk told her, upset with her reaction to the whole situation.

Erk spun the staff around to hand it over to her by the top-side tip. Serra smiled and grabbed it, but when she did, she felt a little spark from the tip of the staff, like a small jolt that electrified her whole body for a moment. Serra yelped and ended up dropping the staff to rub her hand.

"What's wrong?" Erk asked, annoyed that she'd dropped the precious staff that she'd wanted so much.

"That thing just zapped me!" Serra told him, pointing at the magical item.

"Hmm..." Erk wondered just what kind of staff it was that Serra had gotten. He had to admit, when he saw how happy she was when she bought it at the shop in the last town they'd visited, he hadn't been paying much mind to the conversation her and the shopkeeper were having about it, having been bored out of his mind from being dragged around all day by her. However, he knew that using such staves as healing and mend were not his area of expertise, so even if he wanted to, it wasn't likely that he'd been the one to "zap" her with its magic.

"Hey! Earth to Erk!" Serra yelled, snapping Erk's attention back to her. "What the hell did you do to me!?"

Erk was wondering what the young cleric was complaining about now, but when he looked back up at Serra, he noticed two things. First, he didn't have to look nearly as high as used to, confusing him for a moment before he looked down and saw that Serra had shrunk! Somehow the staff had made his white-clad friend suddenly shrink right in front of him! She squeaked at him, saying all kinds of rude things and demanded he fix this. Erk had to hold back a chuckle at the sound of her high-pitched voice. The second thing he noticed was that she had shrunk to...
