Chapter #7

Bugging Lucina

    by: Kooplan Author IconMail Icon
Lucina noticed a small indent in the dirt path leading to the fight between her father and the risen, it was a small shortcut to the action, but a shortcut nonetheless. Lucina diverted from her previous direction and headed straight into the long indent. Once inside, Lucina noticed how big it seemed at her scale, it was almost like a large valley to her, the walls on either side of her were about twice as high as she could hope to reach. The path itself was a straight shot, and the valley was very narrow. She could guess that it was most likely a sort of wheel that had created the way.

Please wait for me, Father! Lucina thought as she ran.

About half way through the half-tunnel, Lucina heard some scuttling coming from above her. She looked up and saw a praying mantis crawling about on the top of the left side of the valley, while an armored beetle crawled just ahead of it and was moving pretty fast for a bug. Suddenly, the mantis jumped down behind Lucina, while the beetle crawled down from the side of the valley and blocked Lucina's path forward.

"Bugs, seriously..? Are they intelligent!?" Lucina groaned, now regretting her choice to take the faster way to rescue her father. Time was of the essence and she didn't have time to waste being held up by mere insects, no matter how much bigger they appeared to her at her new size. On that matter, Lucina was thankful she still had her weapons with her, even though they were reduced in scale with the rest of her body. Still, despite her size, she should be able to defeat at least a bug or two.

Lucina readied her Parallel Falchion and charged at the creature in front of her, the rotund armored beetle. Her stride was proud, the result of long training under her father's guidance. Her long, blue hair flowed in the air behind her as she moved with all the swiftness of a raging river. The three-inch tall young woman's form looked as strong as ever, if not as intimidating as it used to be. Lucina was confident when she struck at the beetle's hefty top shell. But even with her little might behind the attack, Lucina's sword just merely bounced off of it.

"Damn this miserable insect!" Lucina shouted in anger. She jumped backwards, away from the beetle to rethink her approach. It didn't look like she'd be able to easily cleave it's hard shell at her current size. She again cursed her current, diminished height. This would not even be an obstacle to her at her normal height, a simple stomp or even just one of her regular-sized fingers would get the job done. It was pointless to think about though, she was shrunken to a pitiful height, and she was fighting for her life against a duo of mere insects. But, even though she was shrunken considerably, Lucina could hardly believe her strength had diminished so badly that she couldn't even crush a beetle's shell.

Just then, Lucina heard the steps of the mantis coming from behind her. She glanced back just in time to see the charging at her with its arms drawn like weapons and slicing at her. Lucina raised her sword and blocked its attack.

This is ridiculous! Lucina thought as she struggled against the mantis's sword-like arms. She thrust with what strength she had left, and pushed the mantis off of her. It recoiled for just a moment before jumping up onto the cliffs of the dugout. Lucina kept a watchful eye on the annoying insect as it slowly walked above her. It wasn't very big, even at her size, but it was still long enough that it could reach down and swipe at her from above. Which is exactly what it did next.

"Are you kidding me!?" Lucina shouted as the first swipe coming down quickly, she just barely managed to dodge it. She was prepared for the next swing of it's arms however, and blocked it with her Parallel Falchion just in time. The mantis wasn't about to let up on the tiny girl though, and it kept up its barrage of attacks, forcing Lucina to block each one with her swift blade movements. The mantis was keeping Lucina distracted while the beetle had charged up and was rushing towards the miniature blue-haired young woman.

Only out of the corner of her eyes did Lucina notice the beetle's sneak attack incoming. She gasped and braced herself with her blade to protect herself, but a close swipe from the mantis above her turned her attention back to the dangerous creature. Lucina blocked the mantis's next attack, but the beetle was almost on her at this point. With nothing left to do, Lucina acted without thinking and crouched down to avoid the mantis's attacks, while keeping her sword raised in a defensive position to shield her against the beetle's ramming attack.

Lucina closed her eyes as the beetle got nearer. It hit her. She tried to parry it back with her blade as soon as it made contact, but when it rammed her it did so with such force that she was knocked to the ground. The shrunken woman screamed as the beetle ran over her body. She hadn't expected such a small, light, creature to feel so heavy, but it did, and thanks to its many legs it felt more like being stampeded by many animals rather than just the one that overtook her. Lucina wound up reeling from the injuries the bug caused her.

Am I really about to lose to insects!? Lucina whimpered on the ground. She rolled over and watched as the mantis prepared to drop down and cut her up with its sharp appendages. She couldn't believe it, was this really how she would die..?
