Chapter #6

A totally original idea

"Princess Elincia." Ike began. He wasn't sure how else to start the tale. He moved to the table with the shrinking potion on it, and grabbed a chair for the green-haired young woman. She looked at him, puzzled. But sat down anyway. Ike joined her across the table.

"My lord Ike, please, if there is something troubling you at all, you can tell me." Elincia told him ever so kindly. Ike smiled at her and nodded. Usually he was the one to provide her with comforting words. He cursed Soren for putting him into such an awkward position.

"Well, it's about this..." Ike said, picking up the potion that Soren had left him. He fumbled with the potion for a moment before looking at Elincia and explaining, "It's a shrinking potion."

"Shrinking potion?" Elincia giggled lightly, cutely covering her mouth with her hand, as to not offend Ike. She couldn't help but feel like Ike had taken to reading too many children's books lately. "Surely you're not trying to have fun at my expense here?"

"No, princess Elicina. It's true, as far as I know." Ike answered. Suddenly thinking about whether or not the potion would work as Soren advertised it to. He'd not seen any evidence of it being able to shrink things at all. All he had to go on was Soren's word, which was a lot, to be fair.

"I see. I've never seen a shrinking potion before. What would you intend to use this for, my lord Ike?" Elincia asked. She'd giggled before, but now she seemed to be taking Ike's claims more seriously.

"So." Ike wanted to just come out and say it, but he hesitated. A moment passed.

"Yes, my lord Ike?" Elincia asked, not suspecting a thing of how Soren truly wanted to use the potion. How could she imagine that it was made solely for shrinking her?

Ike decided it was better to just break the news to her, and took a page from Soren's book, giving it all to her straight. He told her about how Soren had come up with it on his own, and how he had just proposed the idea of shrinking Elincia for her own safety to him. He also explained that Soren supposedly had also created a growth potion for the reverse effect.

Throughout the explanation, Ike watched Elincia's face carefully, trying to judge how the green-haired princess was taking things. The Crimean royalty remained calm all the while, leaving Ike to wonder if she'd understood the full magnitude of the situation, or if she was just thinking it was another joke.

"... so that's about the gist of it. I'm sorry I have to be the one to tell you all this, but I feel like Soren has a point here, despite his methods." Ike finished. Elincia looked dumbfounded by it all. So Ike hastily added, "You don't have to take it, if you don't want to."

"You agree with him, my lord Ike? About my usefulness on the battlefield?" Elincia asked quietly.

"Not entirely. I believe you've become a capable fighter in your own right, but at the same time, it is dangerous, and we can't always be there to protect you." Ike admitted. Elinica was downstruck by his words. She sighed.

"No, I understand, my lord Ike..." Elincia replied slowly, her eyes locked onto the bottle of shrinking potion the whole time.

"I'm sorry. I knew it was foolish." Ike said, beginning to get up from his seat. He took the potion bottle with him.

Meanwhile, Elincia looked at the bottle with wonder. She'd taken it all in as best she could, but it was a lot to drop on her along with the news that the commander and his tactician both were in agreement that she should not be fighting alongside them. It was certainly a humbling revelation, but one that she could understand, even if she didn't like to hear it. Elincia watched as Ike took off with the shrinking potion, probably going to throw it all down the nearest drain. She hesitated, but finally spoke up...
