Derick bought her just for you.

"Listen son, I bought Emily just for you."

He waits for you to understand that statement.

"Just...for me?" you repeat, still not understanding.

Derick sighs and glances at Emily who keeps to herself, feeling it's improper to disrupt now as her purchaser explains.

"If I'm being blunt here, I bought her so she could be a companion to you. Yet, I also wanted her to help provide for you by being a mother figure. I know you miss your mother and I do too. There won't ever be a replacement for that wonderful woman who helped raise you but I want you to feel happy."

"Dad, I am happy! You didn't need to-"

"No, I did!" he cuts you off and clenches his teeth, "I'm barely here to even greet you in the morning much less when I come home!"

You are shocked by his outburst. It appears he held great guilt in his heart for not being available as a parent for you. As far as he knows, there is still much work to do in order to support you for the future when you'd go to college.

He continues, more softly. "...and I don't see that changing for a while. I...I want Emily to be someone that can be there for you when I'm not. Do this for me, please son."

You take a step back, curling your lips with emotions. Staying calm though, you face Emily who smiles reassuringly.
