"Alright, you got me," Melanie said, dropping her cute little girl act. "My real name is Melanie Jenkins, and I just discovered the Hallway. I was hoping to just take it easy as a little girl."
"Well, my real name's Amanda, and I'm currently in my normal life. I was hoping for a normal day as myself, but well, I'm babysitting a woman who's older than me. How long have you been living as Lisa?"
"Since about 9 this morning, when mom dropped me off at school."
"Well, you're stuck like that until 9 am tomorrow. Once you've picked a life, there's a 24 hour waiting period before you can change your mind."
They both laughed, and sat down on the couch, Melanie kicking off her shoes.
"So, who have you been before?" Melanie asked.
"Lots of people - politicians, businessmen, various random people. Actually, I spent a couple days as a baby, and that was quite an experience, being waited on hand and foot." Amanda sighed as she picked up a soda. "Downside is that no one could understand me."
"You mean you couldn't talk?" Melanie asked.
"Oh, I could talk. But because my 'parents' hadn't used the Hallway, all my speech came out as baby talk to them."
"Is that why my mom could pick me up despite my size?" Melanie asked.
"Pretty much. Reality around you compensates for these sorts of changes. I guess it sells the illusion better."
Amanda picked out another soda and gave it to "Lisa".
