What would have been an uneventful day for Lisa Garner turned out to be a fun vacation for Melanie Jenkins. She could put aside her normal life as a wife and mother, and now live free of adult responsibilities, all while retaining her adult knowledge and experience. Between relatively easy lessons on numbers and letters, she engaged in games, ate the snacks her "mother" had packed and took a nap. And despite the fact that she was bigger than all the other kindergarteners, no one noticed or cared. Melanie wondered if she could spend more than a day in this new life.
Once the school day was finished, Melanie went outside, and saw a station wagon, with her "mother" getting out of the car. Not wanting to break character, Melanie ran to her "mother", and jumped into her arms. Despite being slightly taller than her new "mother", Melanie didn't knock her over, even with all her might, and her "mother" reciprocated by lifting her off the ground. Melanie's decreased weight was an unexpected way to compensate for the change in reality, but she didn't mind.
On the car ride home, Melanie and her "mother" discussed her first day of kindergarten, with "mother" being none the wiser. Then, an announcement was made...
"Dad and I are going out, so we arranged for Amanda to babysit you tonight."
Melanie was briefly confused, but suddenly remembered - Amanda was a teenage girl who was Lisa's neighbour, and she frequently babysat when her parents were out. She often brought movies along to watch with Lisa, and viewings would often end with Lisa falling asleep in time for bed. To Lisa, Amanda was like the older sister she never had.
"Okay, mommy!" Melanie said, doing her best to sound like an enthusiastic child.
When they got home, Melanie dashed off to her room to observe it for the first time. There were dolls and stuffed animals everywhere, and several pictures. The one that amused her most was one of her sitting on Santa's knee, despite clearly being a grown adult.
While Melanie was taking in her new surroundings, the doorbell rang. She heard voices.
"Hi, Amanda!"
"Hey, Mrs. Garner. Where's Lisa?"
"Oh, she's in her room right now, but I think she's looking forward to seeing you again."
"I'll bet she is. I brought her a nice surprise."
"Well, we gotta get going. Call us on our mobile if you need to."
Melanie then heard her "parents" walking out the door and driving off. She headed out of her room to meet Amanda the babysitter...
