Chapter #2

Kaede Akamatsu the Ultimate Pianist

Groaning as she woke up, Kaede’s eyelids fluttered as she struggled to get her bearings. The last things she remembered were that both Shuichi and her had found an unlocked storage room in the upper levels while exploring. When they went in to investigate after hearing something being knocked over, her companion’s strangled cough could be heard before her vision went black… Oh god, something had attacked Shuichi!

“upupupupu… Wakey Wakey, Rise and Shiney!” Trying to turn her head to see the source of the familiar yet creepy laughter, the blonde gasped at finding herself strapped down to a pianist’s chair by a thick metal band over her thighs. Luckily for her, it seemed that was all Monokuma had done, judging by the fact that her pink sweater, white school shirt and purple-motifed skirt hadn’t been tampered with. “W-What’s going on! What have you done with Shuichi!

“So impatient… And to think I even brought you a present!” Covering his grinning mouth with one paw, Monokuma jumped off the black object in front of Kaede. As the lid opened to reveal a grand piano, a few pages of sheet music were lowered onto their holders. “As for what your boyfriend is doing… Let’s just say I’m working on turning that frown upside down. And that’s a promise, kiddo!”

Finding some relief that Shuichi was at least still alive, the ultimate pianist temporarily turned her attention to the pieces of paper. While Fantasia No.2 in D minor was quite an advanced song, it wasn’t anything too troublesome if someone of her skill level were to play it out. With the items given to her, it couldn’t possibly be that…

“Since you’re so smart in finding that hidden area, I’m pretty sure you have an idea of what to do, don’t you, Kaede-chan?”

“You want me… To play the song? Is that it?”

“Upupupupu, you’re much more clever than you let on… Maybe even too clever…” Monokuma sat on the glossy cover, kicking his legs as he mulled about. “A-Anyway, don’t get too carried away! If you can play the song without making any mistakes, I’ll let you and that emo-detective go free!”

“And what if I mess up?” Feeling a chill run down her spine as the lifeless beardroid turned to face her, Kaede could have sworn that its glowing crimson eyes were digging into her very soul. “I don’t think I'll need to tell you what happens if that comes around, Kaede-chan. It would be extremely troublesome to clean someone’s guts off of this large noisemaker, upupupupu.”

Feeling a small knot of fear at the insinuation of the hidden threat, Kaede slapped both her cheeks with her palms. If she, the ultimate pianist, couldn’t play this piece of music, what hope did everyone else have with Monokuma’s little challenges? Closing her eyes as she calmly breathed out, her fingers placed themselves on the first notes from years of practice. Opening her eyes with newfound determination, the blonde began to play the first part of the tri-factra masterpiece.

“Oh did I forget to mention Kaede-chan…” Kaede tried to ignore Monokuma’s eerie words. Just nearby however, her trained ears could barely make out the sound of something over the flowing music… Was it clapping? “Your wonderful audience would also like a more… interactive participation!”

With two ghostly floating hands now coming into view, the blonde gulped as her eyes followed the moving appendages, even as her own continued to play the song from pure memory. Closing her eyes to block out the new interference, Kaede almost squealed in surprise when the two hands clamped against her sides with wiggling fingers. “W-What! Y-You didn’t say anything about floating hands!”

“Oh, did I? My bad, upupupupu~!” Snickering as Monokuma watched the hands work their magic, Kaede failed to suppress a crooked grin from appearing on her mouth. While their movements were somewhat ticklish, the woolly thickness of her sweater prevented most of the distracting prods from doing their job.
