This choice: Try to get help from Yu, who knows Marie more than she does. • Go Back... Not knowing where Marie could have gone and not wanting to terrorize her drastically reduced hometown to look for her, Chie decided to seek help elsewhere. Her immediate impulse was to go to either her best friend Yukiko or her boyfriend Yu. Both cared about her unconditionally, and both would be able to keep her calm during this strange, confusing time.
Given that Yu lived closer, wasn’t in an inn full of potentially easily panicked people, and actually spent time with Marie voluntarily and might be able to help find her, Chie decided on him.
As carefully and quickly as she could, Chie made her way to Yu’s neighborhood. Even her lightest footsteps created massive quakes and tore up the concrete roads and carefully managed lawns and gardens beneath her feet.
She took the long way around to avoid the shrine, knowing that the New Years’ Eve festival would be setting up, and that there’d be more people there than usual. This did no good, however, as people in the shopping district could still see her looming in the distance. Most panicked and ran, save for a certain blonde freshman who was helping his mother deliver kimonos.
“Holy shit,” Kanji muttered, dropping the expensive garments he was carrying as he pulled out his phone. “Gotta call Senpai!”
Unaware of the attention she already received, Chie made her way to Yu’s house. Some of the Dojimas’ neighbors saw Chie and ran away screaming. The giantess did her best to ignore it and focus on the task at hand.
As sad as it is that Nanako-chan and her dad are still in the hospital, at least it makes this less awkward, Chie thought as she looked down at the two-story house. It was surreal to see the building that had effectively become a second home to Chie and her friends over the year only come up to her shins.
It’s kind of cute at this size. I bet Yu-kun is too…
Shaking the thought from her mind, Chie crouched down as low as she could and lightly tapped on the roof.
“Yu-kun?”
---
Yu sighed sadly as he woke up and took in the empty house. Nanako and his uncle had returned to the hospital shortly after Christmas, and while the atmosphere was less oppressive now that Yu knew they’d both recover soon, the house was still far too silent without his makeshift family in it.
I need a distraction, Yu thought to himself. I wonder if Chie’s doing anything before the festival? We could train. Or make out. Yu smiled. Or both…
The house started to shake.
“Huh, that’s odd,” Yu said out loud. “This is the first earthquake Japan’s had since I came to Inaba…”
The shaking started to get more violent. Yu noticed that there was an odd rhythm to it. It almost sounded like… footsteps?
That was when he heard screams coming from outside. Then his phone rang.
“Kanji?” Yu answered. “What’s going on?!”
“Senpai!” Kanji yelled. “Chie-senpai’s heading for your house!”
“Okay…” Yu said, raising an eyebrow. “That’s good to know. Not sure why you’re the one telling me, though. Wait, is she out during this earthquake?!”
"It ain’t an earthquake!” Kanji yelled. “She’s…”
What sounded like an explosion rocked the ceiling above Yu, violently shaking the house as his shelf full of model robots and television all fell to the floor.
“Yu-kun?”
“She’s… like… giant or somethin’!”
Yu calmly walked to his bedroom window and opened the curtain. The impossibly giant brown eye of his girlfriend stared back at him.
“So she is,” Yu said. “Kanji, I’m going to have to call you back.”
Signaling the giantess outside to wait, he hung up and ran downstairs.
---
He really is cute like this…
Before she could stop herself, Chie picked her boyfriend up, holding him close to her.
“Chie, what happened?” Yu asked, somewhat muffled by the giant green fabric of her jacket. “How did you end up like this?”
Chie blushed as she came back to her senses, and brought her friend up to eye level.
“Um… Marie-chan gave me this drink after I failed to stop those bullies from picking on a kid,” Chie answered. “She said it would help me ‘see what’s going on in town’ or something. I was just humoring her…”
Yu pondered this.
“Okay. I know where to find her. Or at least ask about her,” Yu said. He looked around at the wreckage Chie had inadvertently created to reach him. “But first, we should get you somewhere less populated. Maybe the woods or something?"
Chie nodded and gently closed her hands around her tiny boyfriend, trying to figure out the best way to get out of the neighborhood without causing more damage. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
