Small World

(Spoilers for December Full Moon.)

January 9, 2010
Saturday, Daytime

Minako Arisato found it difficult to pay attention in class. She was just too exhausted. She had spent the last night in Tartarus, preparing for The Fall and the arrival of Nyx. The only thing they could do was train in Tartarus, same as always. However, everything was just tense. Sparing Ryoji’s life was the right decision, but that didn’t make things any easier. They had a little less than a month to prepare.

The final bell ringing snapped her out of her sleepy trance. School was over, and she was free to spend it with some of the best people she ever met. In her years of transferring from school to school, she never stayed longer than a few months. Going an for nearly an entire year was exciting to the young girl In fact, she was sure she was going to graduate from Gekkoukan beside her friends once they got the whole Nyx thing sorted out.

“You okay, Mina-chan?” Junpei asked.

“Oh, yup, I’m fine,” she said. “I was thinking… How about you, me, and Yukari go grab something to eat? Get some protein for tonight.”

“You’re talking like Akihiko-senpai,” Yukari joked, walking over to her best friend’s desk. “And yeah, I could go for something to eat.”

The trio idly chatted as they made their way back home. They stopped at the strip mall and surveyed the places to eat. Yukari opted to grab some Takoyaki while Junpei stepped inside the Wild-duck Burger to get something for himself and Minako. Meanwhile, Minako took up a spot at the picnic table.

Then a Velvet Room door appeared in front of her.

“Huh,” Minako said aloud. She was used to Elizabeth being forward about wanting to leave and go out on one of their ‘dates,’ but this was taking it to another level. Elizabeth’s brother Theodore would often apologize then thank her for sharing her time. He figured that Elizabeth wanted some takoyaki or something.

The red-haired girl got up from the picnic table and approached the door.

“Hey, Minako-chan,” Yukari called, noticing her friend and the strange door. “Where are you—“

Minako disappeared, and so did the door.

“Going?” Yukari finished.

Seconds later, a similar door—one much smaller—appeared on the picnic table.

----

“Lizzy? What’s up?” Minako called. She took a few steps forwards before realizing that the door she walked through did not lead to the Velvet Room. “Uh, where am I?”

“There’s someone else!” called another voice, a boy.

“Interesting,” said another boy’s voice.

Minako could make out a few specks in the distance. She looked behind her, finding only a dark void behind her. Within seconds of chasing the specks, she made out the two boys one with gray hair and one with frizzy black hair.

And they were pretty cute.

The three managed to meet up. They were completely wordless, all trying to think of the right thing to say to each other.

“So did you guys walk through a blue door?” Minako asked bluntly.

“Yep,” the boy with silver hair answered.

“That’s about right,” said the boy with the black hair. “Are you two Persona-Users?”

“Yup-yup!” Minako said.

“Yeah.”

Minako bowed politely “Minako Arisato. Second year at Gekkoukan High School.”

The boy with silver hair’s eyes flashed with recognition. “Gekkoukan? In Port Iwatodai?”

Minako nodded. “Mmmhmm.”

“I went on a school trip there last year. Small world,” the gray haired boy said nostalgically. “I’m Yu Narukami.”

The boy in glasses nodded. “Akira Kurusu.”

Yu hummed. “Persona-users, Velvet Room door. So I’m guessing we’re all wild-cards.”

“Guilty,” Akira answered.

“Three for three,” Minako remarked. "Small world."

“Isn’t it kind of suspicious?” Yu asked. “Something wants us all together. But why?”

Their answer came in the form of a trio of doors appearing right in front of them. The first door whipped open. And like an broken window on an airplane, air was sucked through the open portal. Strangely enough, the only one affected was Akira, who immediately was forced through the door only to have it close behind him.

“Wh-what was that!?” Minako cried, jumping onto Yu for support. “Where’d he go!?”

“I don’t kno—“

Before Yu could finish his statement, the second door flew open. Like before, he was sucked through and vanished along with the door.

Minako backed away from the last door, dreading the moment it opened. However, she was completely powerless as what sounded like iron bars creaked open, and she felt a powerful wind pulling at her. “N-no! No!”

Before she knew it, she had landed face first onto a hard surface. She let out a soft whine as she sat up.

Minako realized something was wrong when she made eye contact with a pair of eyes much larger than her. She let out a startled shriek as she recoiled, falling on her back. Terrified, she slowly inched away, crawling backwards until she hit a wall. Minako looked up, wanting to know what had stopped her from escaping.

It was a giant television set. The entire room was gigantic.

“It’s okay. I won’t hurt you.” reassured the much larger girl. Minako was finally able to get a better look at the stranger. She was naturally blonde and had a bright pair of blue eyes. Nothing about her said evil. In fact, the concerned look in the giant girl's eyes said the opposite. “You’re safe.”

Minako fainted.
