Chapter #6

Oh No... There Goes Tokyo...

    by: Silverhammer Author IconMail Icon
“Hoshi! There's a problem! There's been a catastrophic misfire!”

“What happened, Homura?”

The satellite currently in orbit over Japan was supposed to shoot a blast of gamma radiation into a predetermined spot in Osaka, where a member of the conspiracy- a turncoat from the Kirijo Group- had stashed a female android named Labrys that he had stolen from his employers and reprogrammed to be loyal to their cause.

Something had gone awry.

“Our orbital calculations were way off course!” Homura exclaimed. “We've fired into Tokyo. Specifically near the Aoyama Itchome region.”

“No,” Hoshi muttered, cradling his head in his hands. “No, no, no, no, no! Tokyo's the seat of Japan's government! There will be too much chaos for our leader to act! This ruins everything!”

The two sat in petrified silence.

“M... maybe it'll be okay,” Homura suggested. “Maybe it won't hit anything.”

“I pray that it doesn't, Homura,” Hoshi sighed. “I pray that it doesn't.”

“Is... is that a castle?!” Ann blurted. “What happened to the school?! Why are you two dressed like that?!”

Ann gaped at her surroundings like a fish in a desert. She was following Ryuji and Akira in secret, hoping to force them to let her in on their plan if she could figure out what said plan was, when Akira said some words into his phone, and suddenly the world around them changed. The school turned into a giant medieval castle, the cat following Ryuji and Akira turned into some sort of... living cartoon character or something, and Ryuji and Akira were suddenly wearing different outfits. Akira was dressed as a gentleman thief from an old movie, and Ryuji was dressed as some kind of Yakuza thug. Both were now wearing masks.

Akira turned towards Ann, visibly shocked to see her.

“Okay, guys, important safety tip,” Akira announced to the other two. “Always make sure nobody's around before we use the Metaverse App.”

“How was that not obvious?!” the cat exclaimed in exasperation. “You two are such amateurs!”

“The cat just talked,” Ann muttered numbly.

“Takamaki-san,” Akira said, holding up his hands placatingly. “Like I said before, I promise I'll explain all of this to you once everything's done. But right now you need to go. It's dangerous, and you've got no way to defend yourself against what's in there.”

“Like hell I'm going!” Ann retorted, still not understanding what was going on, but feeling distinctly patronized to and not appreciating it.

“Sorry, Joker, we tried it your way,” Ryuji said. “Looks like we gotta make her leave. Grab her legs.”

“What? No! HEY! PUT ME DOWN!”

The next thing Ann knew, she was thrown onto her butt. She looked around. The school was back to being a school, and Ryuji, Akira, and the talking cartoon cat were nowhere to be seen.

“Bastards,” Ann grumbled, searching the alleyway for some method of following them back to... wherever she just was. Coming up empty, she stopped and thought for a moment. “How did they get there anyway? Akira said something into his phone...”

On a whim, Ann pulled her own phone out of her pocket and noticed, to her surprise, a new app that wasn't on there the last time she looked. The icon was a black square with a stylized red eye in the middle.

“Akira-san mentioned something called a 'Metaverse App,'” Ann mused. “Could this be...”

Ann's train of thought was interrupted as a burst of gamma radiation came from the sky and poured into her, the pain causing her to accidentally fling her phone away.

“AAAAAHHHH!”

The phone landed on the sidewalk, its new mysterious app never to be used. In fact, Ann's cell phone would be the first of many things destroyed by what was about to happen...
