"What do mean 'we don't know'?" Annoyed, you demanded. "You know better not to leave your sister alone the way she is right now!"
"We're only seven." Defending herself, Ina fired back.
"She was just here." Frowning, Tia added. "maybe she went to the bathroom or something."
"You just lost a week of allowance." Irritated, mom said. "I told you both not to let her out of your sight for an instant. Your attitude is completely unacceptable."
Ina and Tia both gasped as if they had been slapped. "But mommy...!" Whining, they protested.
You huffed before hurrying into the ballet school to find Joeanna sitting in a corner on the far end of the dance floor. She sounded as if she were weeping. Coming closer, you saw that she was wearing a pink girls' ballet costume with white flats and her now long auburn hair in a neat bun on the top of her head. You winced, thinking Ina and Tia might have gone a bit too far in teasing their new sister. "Joe..." Gently, you called. "Joe, you okay?"
"I want to go home..." Sniffing, Joe demanded.
"We're here to take you home, Joe." Slowly approaching, you said. "I'm sure you have a lot of questions to ask about what happened today."
Joe turned to you, a glint of anger in her hazel eyes. "You think? It was bad enough what mom did to me this morning! Ina and Tia wanting me to dance at their recital didn't help much!" She sniffed. "I have until tomorrow to give the instructor Miss Franz my decision."
"Please, Joe." Whispering, you said. "We'll talk about this when we get home."
