Roy

"Are you sure you went potty already?" Mom asked, turning her head slightly without taking her eyes off the road. "Yeah, mom!" Roy answered, kicking his feet one after the other in his large car seat fastened behind her on the passenger's side. "Did he?" Mom glanced to the passenger's seat. "That's what he told me!" Roy's aunt replied. "Yeah, I did!" Roy barked in a frustrated tone. "I did already. When are we going home?" he whined, trying to look out the window. Roy's mother nearly scoffed. "Oh, Roy, this is probably going to be a while. Remember I said we're going to preschool today?" She glanced toward the backseat as Roy's aunt added to her. "Yeah, preschool? It'll be fun!" She said, trying to sound cheery. Roy just winced in response since even if he didn't know what it would be like, he did know that he probably wouldn't like it.

Roy crossed his arms as he watched his mom and aunt leave the room, feeling a bit of anxiety, but not quite as badly as some of the other, more upset first-timers at preschool. He felt a little more at ease since it seemed the lady speaking to the room and his mom got along well when they met, so maybe she would nice like his mom was. He thought that maybe he wouldn't like being there, but once he was around the other kids his age walking around and doing things without him, he knew he didn't like being there. He also didn't like his mom not taking him home earlier, especially because he thought that he could lie about going potty and that it would be okay as long as he was heading home to get changed, again. He stood until the teacher started talking to the small classroom, thinking about how long he could ignore anything related to the potty before going home.

"...So I'm glad everyone is having a good time!" The lady spoke to the small class with a smile, nodding slightly to another lady near the corner. "If you need a teacher, just talk to me or her. Now, we can try something fun in just a moment. Before that, does anyone have to go to the bathroom?" She asked in a particularly inquisitive tone. The children in the room mostly stayed quiet, some looking to one another. Roy just stood where he was while the teacher continued. "Anyone have to go potty? Anyone?" She asked nicely as Roy almost put his hand up, but chose to stand still. "Nuh-uh..." He said under his breath as two or three other kids raised their hands. "Okay, no problem. It's right here, see everyone? You can just talk to us if you need to go..." She addressed the rest of the class, Roy trying to look in a different direction.

After brief introductions from everyone to everyone else in class, Roy giving his own clammy greeting on his turn, everyone sat at small, round tables where several toys, blocks and knickknacks were spread out. "Why not look at all the stuff we have, hm? And when you're done, try to share it with your neighbor." The assistant teacher hovered over each of the tables. Most of the children were busy putting things together or moving things around, but Roy didn't even want to play if it meant he just had to give it to someone else right after he started. He also started to wonder if it was almost time to go home only about an hour and fifteen minutes after he'd arrived. Roy fiddled with the few idle toys in front of him without any particular interest, half due to knowing he'd be giving it up almost right away, and half due to the feeling of still needing to go potty. He tried not to think about it, but the more he sat in place, the more thought about it more and more. Then he had to start trying to forget about asking the teachers to take him, since it really didn't sound like a lot of fun. Besides, he just had to hold it until he went home, or at least got to the car so his mom or his aunt could change him later. Eventually he felt like it might take longer than he thought to go home, causing him to think about maybe asking the teachers to help him out. But he just kept thinking about how uninteresting it sounded, or embarrassing to ask for that during playtime. So Roy continued to sit where he was, trying to avoid all thoughts about going potty. He just turned his chin up completely at the idea of asking or going or anything, that was that.

After Roy made his decision, he sat idly playing with things by himself as...
