This choice: Sheriff Diane Peakes  •  Go Back...
Chapter #3

Increasing Caseload

It was a cloudy November morning as Sheriff Diane Peakes parked her patrol car at her favorite bakery for her morning coffee. The sheriff didn’t mind grey mornings or the cooling weather. Autumn happened to be one of her favorite seasons. A time of changing colors on the trees and it wasn’t as cold as winter. Exiting out of the vehicle Diane Peakes stood at her full 5’4’’, a very full 5’4’’. She hitched her radio on her belt and proceeded to walk into the bakery.

“Diane!” said a chipper middle aged man. His was the kind of familiarity only got in a small county. “Coffee’s already boiling on the pot.”

“Bless you Lou,” the sheriff said with a smile. “You’ve got those raspberry jelly filled rolls I like so much?” She leaned against the bakery case full of early morning pastries.

Yessiree, Sheriff Peakes enjoyed her job immensely. She had been a deputy sheriff for a few years before her predecessor had retired and she took on the full position. Not that Sheriff Peakes was bad at her job but crime in the county was at an all time low. Most of the time she just sat in the car with her deputies watching for speeders on the highway. Her time spent on such stakeouts had softened Diane, no one would tell it to her face but she had definitely packed on a few pounds. Most of it from getting a dozen doughnuts for breakfast each day (and being the one who ate most of them).

Today, however, was going to be different.

As Diane was receiving the box her radio squawked. “Sheriff, we’ve got some more intell on an, um, incident.”

“I’ll have to go Lou. Put these on my tab.”

--------------

The scene was Gerbert Gerbil’s Pizza, a childrens’ entertainment and dining center. Diane’s niece had a birthday here two months ago. Otherwise Sheriff Peakes couldn’t remember any other complaints.

Another squad car had already been on the scene once Diane drove up. Gerbert’s was closed except for the morning crew. There may not even be customers today depending on how long this took.

Diane’s number two, Deputy Ruben Lamport, ducked under the yellow tape. He was a square jawed man who always kept himself to full uniform. “Looks to be a doozy here sheriff.”

“Bring me up to speed again, Ruben,” Diane said after swallowing the last of her doughnut.

“Well, it’s like this sheriff…”
