Sure, school was a brief relief. But Freddy always knew that the after school timeframe was inevitable. And day after day, Freddy found himself at Gerbert Gerbil's.
He couldn't help it. Freddy wished he could just go straight home after school but there wouldn't be anybody at home. He wasn't allowed to stay home by himself. Since the bus dropped them off up the street, opposite from their house on the other side of Gerbert's, the family restaurant and arcade became the mandatory after school waiting spot. Waiting for his dad to get off of work. He had an important position in the company and had to work their for long hours. Sometimes Freddy had to wait at Gerbert's for an hour, sometimes longer. Worse of all, his dad didn't understand that Freddy was scared of the place. It was too noisy and unnerving for Freddy to attempt any homework. Often he would be sitting off by himself in abject terror, a low building tension as he saw employees and the mascots roam the establishment.
Suffice to say Freddy never really had fun at Gerbert's. Today was a day like any other. Freddy rebuckled his shorts after leaving the restroom. He hoped Chuck wasn't out there somewhere in the restaurant waiting to pounce on him again. His brother took evil delight from seeing how uncomfortable Gerbert's made Freddy.
For such a glum little boy there were few constructive outlets.
