Instead of morphing into the hulking beast that he always did, nothing happened. His preemptive assault screeched to an unplanned stop, and he stared down at the stone in his hand in frustration.
"Huh? This thing broken?" He flipped it in his hand, tossing the smooth, round stone into the air. But when he reached for it on the way down, the weapon fell to the ground and shattered on the compact dirt. "Dammit." He scooped up the broken pieces, but they crumbled to dust in his hands just as a breeze blew the fine powder straight into his face. Coughing, he cursed under his breath as he wiped the dust away, spitting it from his mouth and brushing it out of his furry ears and hair.
