Chapter #4

Mouse's room

    by: Zygansky Author IconMail Icon
Halfway up the staircase Mouse turned around and yelled. "Dad said you have to watch us. But feel free to leave and break the house rules." Before Summer could make a proper response her sister rushed up the stairs following her two friends into her room. The door shut with a bang. Miss Salt followed her sister for a few steps up the staircase, changed her mind and went back to her newspaper left at the breakfast table. Her junior detective occupation required a more thoughtful response. Had she charged into the room occupied by two hyperactive girls - the quiet one did not count here -, she would rather be ridiculed when the door closed again. Mouse should have told her that she had invited friends on this Saturday morning. It was an unusually early time in the day for kids to come over. Looking at her newspaper without reading further she pondered, that the time was too early unless Mouse was up to something.

After cleaning up the breakfast table, leaving Mouse's used dishes on it, she went into the living room and started one of her favorite movies with the volume turned up. When it started she removed her socks and traipsed up the stairs slowly, leaving out the ones that would creak when you stepped on them. The voices of the movie were booming even on the first floor, rendering any pure listening operation at the door to her sister's room impossible. Summer entered the room next to Mouse's room, which housed the household items like the ironing board and hoover. After locking the door she removed the items from the cupboard and squeezed herself into the narrow space. She opened a small wooden frame in the back wall of the cupboard and reached through the large hole in the wall and leaned forward. It had taken six precious days for her to cut that hole in the wall. Mouse had cherished the mirror she received as present from her sister, not looking at it close enough to see that it was a two way mirror. Now Summer had a prime peeking spot into her sister's room. A small microphone with headphones provided sound.
