This choice: The next day, Becca has a doctor's appointment • Go Back... Doctor Glinfeld, or Doctor G's office, is lined with pictures of balloons and flowers, the likes of which are meant to keep a kid from remembering the harsh truth that they are, in fact, in the doctor's office. The bulk of your meeting with him and Becca had gone smoothly. All numbers are normal for a girl her age, and she squirmed and whimpered for her most recent booster shot, but it was nothing unexpected or outstanding. All in all, it was a pretty boring scene not worth covering.
Doctor G grabbed a clipboard and pen, signaling what you've come to expect as nearing the end of the appointment. "Should Becca dress back up now?" you ask on behalf of your daughter, sitting in her undies twiddling her toes. Doctor G looks up from behind his clipboard and curtly shakes his head no with a professional smile. You find it odd that Becca need be undressed for this part, but he's the professional after all.
"So, do either of you have any questions for the doctor before we finish today?" Doctor G asks, mostly to you. It's not often a six year old has any relevant questions, and it's known that if the door stays open for too long, a kid could drag you down a rabbit hole of irrelevant questions. You wrack your brain trying to remember if there was anything you needed to know, and in your folly, give Becca the chance to ask a question.
"Doctor G, how do I get a big belly?"
Your mind flashes to the other night, where Becca was stuffing her shirt with her pillow and giggling.
"A belly? Now why would you want that?" Doctor G smiles, his eyes lingering on Becca's tummy.
"My teacher, Ms. M. She's got a huuuuuuge belly and I want one like hers!" Becca sticks her arms and legs out in front of her as if she were holding onto a beach ball. "One that wobbles and jiggles and bumps into things and makes me super big!"
A wave of embarrassment washes over your face down through your chest, but after a second you come to the conclusion that if there were ever a time to teach your daughter about healthy bodies and eating habits, what better time than with her trusted pediatrician? You lean in slightly, to listen to Doctor G's reply.
"A big, huge belly, Becca?" Doctor G strokes his chin contemplatively. "Well there's a few ways people grow bellies. Overeating, bloating, pregnancy,"
"No, no babies!" Becca cuts off her doctor. "I want it to be all belly! If it's from a baby it doesn't count!" her pout is both endearing in its sincerity and odd considering its demand.
"Ah, I see. So if we're not impregnating you..." Doctor G makes a scrawled note on his clipboard, a faint look of disappointment on his brow before looking back up. "Yes, I believe I can help you with that!"
"E-excuse me?" You interject. "You think we SHOULD fatten Becca up?"
"Modern pediatricians understand that for a child to develop into a healthy adult, they need to explore their own desires and identities," Doctor G looks at you down the bridge of his glasses, his tone shifting to more of a lecture. "Just as we have learned the benefits of allowing a child to express gender and sexual preference, so too has it become apparent that children need to be able to explore different body types. The idea that bellies are bad is, well, antiquated, wouldn't you agree?"
"I... I guess so?" you relent, not out of assuredness in your own beliefs but rather confusion over a viewpoint which was until this moment new to you.
"Exactly. So Becca, if you think you'd be happy with a big, round belly, there are a few ways we can give you one!" Doctor G then turns to you. "Of course, as her father, you may want to consider taking one of these options as well. It's purely optional, but going through this journey of exploration with your daughter may prove to be an enlightening experience!" He flashes a suggestive grin.   indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
