Chikun Pentathlon is a sport in which teams of two compete in five different events. In all five events, one member of the team has to ride on the shoulders of the other team member.
The first of the five events is a race. The rider is referred to as a jockey and the carrier is referred to as a pony. The second event is similar to a ball game like basketball or rugby however the points are not earned by defeating an opponent but by which baskets the jockey succeeds in getting the ball into. The pony has to run through a field of obstacles to get to the different baskets and there is a time limit. Several teams are on the field at the same time but no team is rewarded for blocking another team. The third event is archery where both the jockey and pony aim for bullseyes. The fourth event is a tug of war and is the first event where points are awarded for defeating an opponent. The fifth event is called jousting but wrestling like moves are allowed. The jousting field is a padded platform surrounded by padded balance beams. Each team starts on the end of a balance beam and runs to the central platform. As many as four teams are allowed to joust on the same platform in rotation and points are awarded for each jockey dismounted. That is if a jockey stays on the platform dismounting twenty other jockeys, he gets twenty points. However, if a jockey is dismounted, he has to wait until other teams have had a fair chance on the field before he can mount his pony and get back on the field. The first teams on the field are given fewer opportunities to re-enter the field to make it fair to the last teams on the field but each team has a minimum of five opportunities to get joust.
Teams are supposed to begin each event riding on shoulders but they are allowed to change riding methods as soon as the event begins as long as no part of the jockey touches the ground and as long as the jockey rides his own pony (doesn't climb onto someone elses pony).
