“Jack, I've got something to tell you,” said Roy to his roommate.
“Hmmmmm?” replied Jack, with a mouth full of scrambled eggs.
“I'm not really Sarah,” said Roy. “I'm actually Roy.”
Jack raised an eyebrow and shot Roy a dirty look, but said nothing. He continued shoveling eggs into his mouth.
“I'm serious,” Roy insisted. “I am not Sarah. I'm Roy – your friend and roommate... and a guy.”
“Sarah, what the hell are you babbling on about?” said Jack with a tired, frustrated expression on his face.
Roy knew his roommate wasn't much of a Morning Person. Maybe this wasn't the best time to tell him this news. Oh well, thought Roy.
“It's this little gizmo,” Roy said, pulling out the high-tech gadget from Sarah's slacks. “I got this from a visitor from an alternate reality. A real, life, genuine parallel earth! He was an alternate version of me, a brilliant inventor in his own world. Anyhow, this device can switch around people's 'life roles,' whatever that means exactly. I've only experimented with it once – on me and Sarah. It zapped us into each other's clothes, and she wound up believing she was really me.”
“Did Roy put you up to this?” sighed Jack, turning his attention back to breakfast.
“I am Roy,” insisted Roy.
“Well, you still look just like Sarah to me,” mumbled Jack.
“Then perhaps a demonstration is in order,” said Roy. “Oh... but you wouldn't be aware of any changes would you? Just like Sarah, you'd only remember the new reality. But... hmmmmmm... what if... what if we held hands when I use the device?”
“Oh, all right,” sighed Jack impatiently. “If it'll keep you satisfied, I'll play along with your little game. But hurry it up, Sarah. I still gotta get dressed and go to work.”
“Fine,” said Roy.
Although it seemed a little fruity, Roy grasped Jack's hand firmly and looked for a target.
“How about... oh perfect!” said Roy. “How about us?”
Still holding Jack's hand, he fired the device once at Jack and once again at himself.
“See, nothing happ--... OHMIGOD!” screamed Jack.
He was no longer sitting at the table but was now standing up and wearing all of Sarah's clothes.
Roy, now sitting down and wearing nothing but a towel, smiled a toothy grin back at his roommate.
“See,” he said. “Told you I'm really Roy. Well... everyone else now thinks I'm you. And they'll all think you're Sarah.”
“Shit!” said Jack, still staring down at himself. He was physically the same, but now wearing Sarah's glasses, a bit of makeup, all her clothes... even his hair had grown out into the same style she wore. All of the clothes now perfectly fit his body.
“Believe me?” laughed Roy, eating a spoonful of Jack's plate of eggs.
“Change us back this instant!” yelled Jack.
“Anything you say, 'Sarah,'” laughed Roy.
Roy grasped Jack's hand again and quickly fired the device off in quick succession at the two of them.
Instantaneously, Jack found himself again seated at the table, clad in nothing but a towel, and munching on a fresh mouthful of eggs.
“Although that still leaves me playing the role of Sarah,” muttered Roy. “But I figure I'll switch myself back with her after she's done working my shift for me today.”
