Jack and Craig were drinking their troubles away in the bar. Another fruitless night leaving them both dismissed and forgotten. Tonight had been the last attempt, with both promising their friend that they were going to succeed tonight, or die trying.
Jack had promised to ask everyone he could, until he got a yes. Telling himself, he'd learn from every rebuff, every derisive laugh, every look of contempt. Craig had heard of negging, and while it didn't come naturally, he was willing to give it a shot. He'd had to google it to be sure he understood it right. Offering a compliment, at the same time as undermining a girl didn't feel like it should work. In fact, he practised a few of his lines with Jack, just as a joke. 'You don't sweat much for a fat girl.'. 'You look good compared to her.', 'You've got the tits, so I can forgive your flat ass'.
If Jack's laugh suggested what his night might entail, it fit with what he half expected. The clock was heading towards 2am, and those who'd succeeded in picking up a partner had already moved on. Jack and Craig looked deep into their glasses, and over to the bartender. The only other occupant in the bar.
A smile started on Jack's face, at some point in the night the usual guy had changed. He didn't know when but his replacement was cute. An exchanged look with Scott showed the same idea forming behind their eyes.
It would be a race to see who asked her out first. Or if the night followed the same pattern, who struck out first.
