Chapter #3

Asking for Directions

    by: Unknown
You wander through the courtyard past groups of young children walking, talking, running, and laughing, until you near the massive white main building. You arrive in the main hall, an enormous area lined with well kept carpeting and spotless white walls (quite a daring feat in a place full of children). You look around, but as modernized as this place is, there aren't any directions posted anywhere. How do the students get around?
You wander the mostly empty halls, the walls of which are decorated lavishly with wreathing and other Christmas decorations. You come upon a staircase, and you can hear multiple voices and a TV echoing down from above; from this, you assume it's a common area. Maybe some students there will know where your brother is. You hike up the stairs, passing a coat of arms comprised of two swords crossing behind a shield bearing an ornate number four, leading you to assume this is the fourth grade dorm. You walk into the main area to see a group of five kids, four boys and a girl, spread out among a few beanbag chairs and a cushy sofa watching a huge flatscreen TV. Whatever was on seems to be on commercial at the moment, giving you the perfect time to ask them for help. You doubt fourth graders would know a first grader, but it can't hurt to ask.
"Uhh, excuse me," you ask, drawing the group's attention. "Do any of you know where I can find Sam Robins, or at least the first grade dormitory?"
"Why?" asks the girl, a fiery redhead with freckles across her nose. "Who are you?"
"I'm his brother," you explain. "I'm here to pick him up."
"You know the last train left for the weekend, right?" a black haired boy reminds you. "You're stuck here for a few days."
"Yeah, I know, I just wanna find him for now. Do you guys know where he is, or where he might be?"
The kids look at each other for a moment, each independently assessing the situation. Then the readhead speaks up again.
