Chapter #3

Smith

If Jake could lay down all of the weirdest days he had on a table, the centerpiece would be what happened yesterday. He's simply walking around the neighborhood since playing video games all day is becoming a bore. Then this weird ass lady came up to him. He's got this overflowing golden locks and a face fitting for Victoria's secret magazine. He'd be hard as fuck if he wasn't gay. It was initially a surprise when the lady touched him, and became more of a stranger danger alert when she dug her hideous claws into Jake's arms. Blood poured out, not from Jake, but from the woman. Her blood was transfused to Jake, and she began to speak in a forgotten tongue. Not like Jake could hear it anyway since he fell asleep in an instant.

Jake awoke hours later, in his bedroom with the shittiest headache he's had in his entire life. Then there is this knowledge, something ancient, something innate. Like how you'd know how to breathe without anyone teaching you. With one snap of his finger, his skin flaked out of his body. Underneath his pale complexion is this ectoplasmic surface. Next thing he knew, the ground is growing farther away. He's floating more like it. All of his skin disappeared, and all that was left is his ethereal astral body. He's a ghost, that's what his mind says. And like ghosts, they can fly, pass through walls, become invisible, and most importantly of all - the power of possession.

Jake would possess one of his brothers if only they were here. Smith recently came back, and his family did not even bother to invite him when they decided to go to town to celebrate. Not like it mattered. They're just going to do the park and observe ducks. Dunking on 12-year-old noobs in an online battle royale is twice as fun as that. And if he came with them, Jake would never have had this sick gift he received from that creepy lady.

And so, Jake decided to sleep. He didn't wake until hours later, when his annoying little shit of a brother jumped up and down on his bed, screaming like a hyena that breakfast is read. Jake went downstairs to see his father finishing the last bite of his pancake. It's seven in the morning, and it seems he's running late from work. Richard bid his children goodbye, but not before reminding Jake of his chores for the day. It's summer, and he has nothing to do. He should pick his weight off of this household, as he'd say. Brandon was eating his breakfast in the living room, watching the latest show on the sports channel.

As for Smith, he's the depressed grump that he's always been since he came home. His time overseas hit him hard, judging by the 100-yard stare in those eyes. He barely touched his pancakes. And it seems the family time yesterday, barely made a dent in his trauma. Jake knows he should be the understanding little brother during this time. But it just sucks, you know? He missed the time when Smith would often berate him for messing up the way he eats. He'd pound on his door at six in the morning, demanding that Jake stop being a lazy ass and help him mow the lawn. Jake can't see him like this.

Jake closed the bathroom doors, and there he transformed into his invisible spectral form. He passed through the wall and floated to the dining room, where Smith was about to leave his breakfast untouched. But before he could, Jake jumped at his body and invaded every hole he could enter. It's a surprise that Smith did not even scream, or made an attempt to call for help. It's like he surrendered to this mysterious force choking the living hell out of him. Jake expected a struggle for control, but nothing of the like happened. The lights went out, and he awoke on the floor. When he stood, he took immediate notice of how tall he's gotten. They say trauma takes a lot out of you, but Jake feels the strongest he's ever been.

Jake walked to the living room where a large antiquated mirror is hung on the wall. There, he saw Smith's reflection with the biggest smile he's ever seen. The bags under his eyes are gone, and so were the thousand-yard stare. It's like what he looked like before he was deployed. Jake coughed and heard Smith's baritone voice instead.

"Smith? You okay?" Brandon asked from the living room.

To see if Jake could impersonate his older brother, he stomped his way to the sofa where Brandon is eating.

"How many times have I told you to eat only on the table," Brandon's eyes grew wide open. He did not expect his older brother to berate him since he's toned down his militaristic attitude since he came home. Brandon wasn't moving so Jake reminded him. "Didn't you hear me?"

"Ye- yes." Brandon has this mixed-up expression on his face. He's happy that his older brother was somewhat back to his normal attitude. But he was also annoyed since he was enjoying the program on the television.

Jake's laughing in his mind. The little shit actually listened to him. He could feel the strength, not only in the body but in Smith's attitude. This is going to be fun.

         What did Jake do next?
