Julie was too aware how loosely Earth's authority was respected this far out in the Solar System. Her journey had been long and tiring, and as she looked down from her platform she wondered how she'd ended up here.
As an ambitious young woman, she leaped at every opportunity for advancement she could. So when this high-profile job turned up she volunteered. There wasn't much competition, for it given it's distance from Earth, and the centre of things. But it would boost her profile.
The Jupiter colonies were far enough away that their research couldn't contaminate the Earth if it went wrong. The stations were fail safe.
Fail-safe if you lived on Earth. However, living in orbit of Jupiter or any of it's satellites, Fail safe meant something vastly different. A death dive into the bottomless atmosphere of the gas giant. Ensuring the destruction of all life, and any contamination.
The governor of the colony was eager for Earth's good favour, and wanted to appear strong. So Julie was a little surprised to find herself addressing the whole population of the station in the only space large enough to hold the population. The central park belt was a functioning bio-sphere, keeping the little colony viable far from home.
Julie tugged nervously at her collar eyeing the podium where she'd address the assembled people. Their hatred practically radiated from every face, from every crossed pair of arms. She was an outsider, a foreign authority setting down the law, and leaving. A law that wouldn't apply to her or her home.
She looked around the various faces, hoping for the sight of someone happy to see here, or listen to her speech. Alas, they looked few and far between.
