Chapter #2

A fair voice.

by: Fanfic T-Mac Author IconMail Icon
Mary-Ann was a humble canary- a pet bird to a famous singer, Madame Cresendo. The two were inseparable- the best of friends -but fate oftens destroys all that is pleasant in life. The Madame had only recently finished one of her shows when the terrible news came- she had cancer. Mary-Ann didn't quite understand what that meant (she was a bird, after all), but she knew something had changed with her mistress. Her beloved friend- the one who had once been so full of life -began to wither. Her smiles were few, her skin seemed to lose all its color and a sickly cough seemed to take her over. One day, she had someone come over to make a "will"; this seemed to be a major turning point for the Madame, as she decided to impart something to her pet... no, to her best friend.

"My dearest Mary" said the Madame "I am sorry to say that my time is short; soon, I will be gone".

Mary-Ann definitely understood that, tweeting a massive storm of chirps that, loosely translated, would've meant "No, it can't be!"

Giving a sad chuckle, the Madame said "Somehow, I knew that you'd say that". Sighing, she opened Mary's cage and took her in hand. "My beloved confidant, it seems like only yesterday that I brought you into my life- a fair voice to match mine. Sadly, it seems that our time together was far shorter than I can admit...". She paused for a moment, as if lost in thought, before continuing. "Don't worry too much for me; I've found a new home for you, and they're going to take good care of you. My only regret is that I had no family to enjoy you with". Speaking thusly, she returned Mary to her cage and left to speak of her will. This went on for a while, stopping only when the darkness of the night settled in. The sky was littered with stars that night, but they all had seemed to dim in the presence of the dark news. Mary-Ann was scared- would life truly be the same for her? Trying to ignore these thoughts, she gazed outside and spotted a shooting star. Strange as it is, she decided to wish upon it.

"I wish..."
