Troubling Mr. Edgeworth

Edgeworth was tired. Exhausted, actually.
The prosecutor was only just beginning to wind down from a very, very long few days spent investigating crime after crime, ultimately leading up to the dismantling of an entire international smuggling ring at roughly four in the morning the previous night. In the time since, he had found the space for about four hours of sleep, and was now arriving at the front parking lot of a restaurant he visited from time to time, on schedule for a reservation made in his name.
As he parked, he was greeted by the sound of two familiar young women's voices.
"Mr. Edgeworth!" both called out. He exited the car, standing up to meet Kay Faraday, the teenage and self-proclaimed Great Thief who had recently declared herself his assistant, and Ema Skye, the younger sister of his former superior Lana Skye, who was back in America on spring break from her university overseas.
"Ema, Kay." he said, a bit too tired for any more long-winded greeting. The two teenagers before him were entirely too upbeat for how little sleep they must have had.
... Well, Kay at least had to be operating on a very short amount, anyway. It occurred to Edgeworth that Ema had been completely uninvolved in the events that had kept him and Kay up for most of the previous night. Perhaps she had at least slept enough to justify such a cheery mood.

Ema had been the one to arrange the reservation at the restaurant, hearing from Kay about their success in their investigation the night prior. She had invited the both of them along for brunch, along with Franziska von Karma and Detective Gumshoe. Gumshoe had been forced to decline the invite, however, citing some sort of trouble he was having with his landlord. Kay had promised to bring him a meal, the last Edgeworth had bothered to listen.

He entered the restaurant with the two girls, the group eventually making their way to their seating area. The space was surprisingly empty. Ema explained that she had made a special request for a more private setting so as to avoid needlessly disturbing him or Kay. Edgeworth suspected that the request would have been denied were it not for his name in particular. Nevertheless, he wasn't about to complain.

Franziska arrived not long after them, joining their table. She also appeared tired, though she was doing a better job of hiding it. After a short while spent in limited conversation, the group ordered and began waiting for their brunch to arrive. During the wait, Franziska rose to use the bathroom.
The table became rather quiet for a while, and their food arrived before Franziska could return. Deciding to wait until she got back, Ema now appeared to be fiddling with something that had been in her shoulder bag.
"... Whatcha got there?" Kay asked after a while, curiosity seeming to override her exhaustion.
"Oh, it's... um..."
Kay raised an eyebrow. "What?"
"W-well, it kinda just showed up in my mail. I don't know what it is exactly, so I've been examining it. Scientifically!"
Kay peered over the table. "... Just looks like spray paint or something to me. Don't you know who sent it?"
"No..." Ema said. She was focusing more on her current efforts to pry the small canister open than her conversation with Kay. "Lemme just..."

A loud hissing sound suddenly broke out, just for a split second. Ema yelped in alarm, and Kay flinched in her seat. Edgeworth almost stood up, and was about to ask what had happened when he suddenly felt a strange sort of dizziness. He leaned on the table, one hand rising to his forehead.
He blacked out.

Having briefly lost consciousness, Edgeworth didn't realize that the same thing had happened to both Kay and Ema at precisely the same moment as him. Moreover, as he slowly awoke again, he didn't immediately realize that the canister Ema had been fiddling with had just caused him to shrink in size, now left at an utterly puny two millimetres high in total. The same, of course, was true of both Kay and Ema, leaving their table seemingly empty all of a sudden, their brunch just sitting there alone.
Meanwhile, Franziska was returning from the bathroom.
