"Nick, if you mess this up, it's gonna upset Pearly. Do you really wanna make her cry?"
"Wh-what? Of course not, but you said-"
"One hand. It doesn't say which, so I don't think it matters. Just hold on to the thing, and wait 'til I say what's next."
Phoenix Wright and Maya Fey sat opposite one another on the pair of couches in the middle of the Wright and Co. Law Offices, their attention fixed on a large, carved stone currently resting on the table between them.
The stone was apparently part of a spiritual training regimen that Maya's cousin, Pearl Fey, wanted her to attempt, though the girl's instructions had been very vague.
Pearl was home in Kurain Village at the moment, leaving the attorney and his assistant to try and enjoy their weekend here in the office. She had left them with a very old set of directions she'd dug up somewhere back in Kurain for a new form of spiritual training Maya could attempt, which revolved around the overlarge stone now resting on the table.
Phoenix had one hand resting on the side of the stone, drumming his fingers there while he waited for Maya to relay further instructions. Maya was touching the stone as well, awkwardly trying to fumble with the instructional scroll Pearl had left her with her one free hand.
"OK, just... hold like that for a bit." she said slowly.
"What, you mean the thing I've already been doing for like five whole minutes?" Phoenix groaned. "Tell me there's more to it than that, Maya..."
"Well, yeah, but these instructions are even older than you are, Nick!" Maya sighed. "And that's saying something..." she quietly added.
Phoenix waited. His palm was sweating a bit.
"OK, I'm gonna try and focus a bit of my spiritual energy into the weird rock. Don't move, alright, Nick?"
"Whatever." he said, shrugging. "It's not like I've got much else to do."
Maya closed her eyes. Several more seconds passed.
Phoenix blinked in confusion.
"Hey, uh... my hand's kinda tingling a bit." he said, getting mildly nervous.
"Hush, Nick. It'll be fine. Just don't move."
He bit his lip. There was a strange, tingly sensation creeping its way up his fingers, reaching his wrist now. Maya still had her eyes closed.
"Y-you're feeling that too, right?" he asked.
"Niiick..." Maya groaned. "I'm trying to concentrate on-"
Something strange happened. Phoenix suddenly felt as if something had pulled him forward by the arm, like he'd stuck his hand into a suction tube. He let out a startled noise, jerking in place. He thought he heard Maya make an alarmed sound as well, but before he could say anything, he blacked out.
He blinked, finding himself on his front on the ground. He pushed upward to stand again, and froze, one foot and one knee on the floor.
"Wh-what the-..."
His surroundings looked wrong. They were... much too big. The ceiling looked like it was a mile away.
A noise nearby made him turn his head.
"Wh-whoa-... Maya!!"
She was lying on the ground as well, face-down. He ran over to her, and helped her up.
"Nick...? What just happened?"
"Uh..."
In the moments that followed, the pair began to realize that, by all appearances, they had shrunk. This at least explained their oversized surroundings, but it was hardly a comfort for them. Phoenix was starting to panic, while Maya was cycling rapidly between alarm and excitement.
"Wh-where the hell are we, anyway...?" Phoenix asked aloud, holding a hand to his forehead. indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
