"Yes, my dear defence attorney." growled Manfred von Karma's deep and unsettling voice. "Thank you for taking the trouble to bring this to me. You've saved me a lot of needless hassle."
"Wh-what!?"
Phoenix stared on in shock as the prosecutor before him produced a weapon of some kind from a pocket in his suit.
Both the defence attorney and his self-appointed assistant, Maya Fey, had come to the police precinct's records room to seek out its collection of evidence relating to the DL-6 Incident, a case of nearly fifteen years earlier. To their combined surprise and alarm, they'd found their most recent courtroom rival, the veteran prosecutor Manfred von Karma already in the room itself, in the process of forcibly taking the entire collection of evidence for himself.
"N-Nick!" Maya blurted out, panicked. "What is that thing!?"
"It... looks like a stun gun." Phoenix said, a chill setting in across his body as von Karma raised the weapon in his hand. "It's usually for self-defence, but..."
"I'm afraid this will do a bit more than simply defend me." von Karma cut in, his wizened face twisting into a smirk. "Although, if you were to simply hand that letter you're holding to me, there would be no need for me to use it."
Phoenix took a step back, tensing up. The letter von Karma referred to was a crucial piece of evidence in itself, which he was rapidly regretting showing to the prosecutor now that he was being threatened for it.
"... No." he said firmly. Maya moved behind him, gently clutching at his arm.
Von Karma's expression hardened a bit. "... In that case, I suppose I have no choice. Know at least that I would have preferred not to do this."
Phoenix spotted von Karma's hand moving, and made to lunge out of the way with Maya in tow, but before either of them could move, a sharp noise split the air of the room, and a flash of light blinded him.
He slowly regained his vision, one hand raised before his face.
"Nick...?" Maya called out.
"Right here." he said, moving his other hand back for her.
"Wh-what was-..."
Maya had just taken his hand, and her grip suddenly tightened as she gasped in alarm. Phoenix's own eyes widened in shock as well.
They were looking at the very same room they'd just been in, but now the shelves rose what looked like half a mile into the air, the ceiling impossibly far away. Even more terrifying, however, was the figure standing over them, casting them into shadow.
Up in the air high above them, von Karma was putting the weapon he'd been holding back into his pocket, still smirking in the same vile manner as before.
"Quite effective." he remarked, his deep voice magnified in horrifying fashion.
Phoenix was frozen to the spot. This wasn't possible, was it...? Von Karma couldn't have been holding a device capable of shrinking him and Maya, could he...?
By all appearances, it was true. He and the terrified medium huddled behind him seemed to be only a few inches tall now, with a leviathan of a prosecutor standing over them.
Von Karma suddenly raised his foot from the ground, the sole of his shoe moving through the air to hover over their heads.
"N-no...!!" Maya gasped, grabbing Phoenix's arm with both hands now. "N-Nick, run!!"
They tried. Turning on the spot and darting toward the space beneath one of the room's many shelves, the pair tried to escape, only for the gigantic shoe to slam down in front of them, blocking their path.
"Th-the other way!" Maya yelped. The tried again, but they still couldn't hope to escape.
Maya let out a scream as a massive hand approached from behind, catching both of them in its grip and lifting them from the floor. They struggled, but couldn't break free as they were carried what looked like a few hundred feet off the ground.
"You remember what I said minutes ago, yes?" Von Karma said aloud, his voice making both of them shudder. "I see no reason to remember defence attorneys. Your kind really are quite similar to mere insects."
"N-Nick, what's he doing...!?" Maya asked frantically, squirming against Phoenix's back. Before he could respond, von Karma tightened his grip on them, making him wince with pain. They could be crushed easily like this...
"It's almost commendable, the danger the pair of you have placed my perfect prosecution record in." von Karma mused. "I wouldn't normally sully my hands with this sort of thing, but I believe you have earned a punishment of some proper measure."
"N-Niiiick...!!" Maya wailed, the pair finding themselves being lowered toward one of von Karma's suit pockets. Within moments, they were trapped in darkness, the hand restraining them finally letting go and leaving them alone, trapped in the pocket together.
With the meddlesome pair restrained, von Karma returned his attention to collecting the last of the DL-6 evidence. If the defence couldn't attend the following day's trial due to their sudden disappearance, he supposed that he didn't really need to remove the evidence any more, but a bit of extra certainty never hurt.
Before long, he was leaving the police station, idly amusing himself with thoughts of just how he might punish the shrunken pair for interfering in his revenge.
