Maya couldn't see it, but she could hear the sound of the doorknob turning from well behind the couch.
The door opened and a single person's footsteps entered. The footsteps hung around near the entry for a little while, but when they approached the side of the couch, Maya got a clear view of the new arrival.
Nick was here.
Her friend was quite the sight at this size. Nick walked in front of the couch and glanced toward it, probably wondering whether Maya was lying down to watch TV or not. He didn't seem to spot her, and she tried waving her arms for his attention, but Nick turned away before she could be seen.
He picked up the remote and switched off the TV. Maya could see that he was carrying a handful of mail, and she remembered having forgotten to bring it in herself.
Nick dropped the mail onto the couch cushion next to Maya's. The girl suddenly had a thought. Was Nick about to sit down?
"... Crap!!"
Maya scrambled to move as Nick moved in front of the couch, stopping right before the large cushion she was standing on.
Phoenix sat down, glad to be off his feet. Maya got the groceries, he'd noticed, but she hadn't done him the favour of turning off the TV before leaving the room.
Oh, well. Maya was Maya.
He picked up the few scraps of mail again and flipped through them.
He wasn't aware of the effort his very small friend had been forced to make to avoid being flattened underneath him as he took a seat.
