Chapter #4

Reader's Choice

    by: Unknown
"Hmm..." Elisa hummed as she read through the menu, sending deep vibrations through the ocean of fat engorging her body. Even as good an actress as she was, however, I could see her eyes lingering on a certain top-left corner of a certain fourth page. "I guess I'll have this 'Gaian Firesauce burger I'd heard so much about...actually, make it two. No, five. Five."

Of course. The fact that it was the most expensive thing we served didn't leave a dent in its popularity; if anything, getting to pay for it was probably the ultimate testament to how friggin' rich you were. "Of course, Miss Young. We'll have it ready for you right away!"

"Well, with an attitude like that, I'm hoping for fine service..." She smirked as she leaned back in her seat, stroking her stomach as it let out a rumble that resonated through the floor.

With more enthusiasm than any other guest I'd waited on, I ran back to the kitchen, trying not to show off too much of a skip. I didn't do my usual glances around to make sure I wasn't about to get snatched away by some starving patron as I ran by, but all the way across the restaurant I didn't remember until it was too late to dodge a black tail that curled around my waist and fished me off my feet, just a few steps from the kitchen doors.

Whichever-greek-goddess-she-was-named-after swung me straight into her belly and smushed me in with both arms, spinning me around as she scraped my face with a wet, sandpapery tongue.

"Gkk...Nike, cut that out!"

"I'm Maia!" She huffed. "I'd think you of all people would recognize me, Gregory!"

"Ah, just let me go!"

I wriggled out of her arms and hit the ground again, but she took care to let her tail drag along my face as I took off for the kitchen. The whole time, Candace was just a few feet from the door, watching us through the window. "Elisa Young wants five Gaian Firesauces!"

"On it." One claw splashed cooking oil onto a pan sitting on the oven, while the other grabbed a log of ground beef from a freezer built above and began mashing it into pulp. "I'm guessing they're all seventy-scaled?"

"Well..." Peeking over the window, I gazed at the mountain of teal seated in the middle of the restaurant, eyeing the path I'd just taken with a hungry look. "Better make them eighties."
