The magic book in her hands, Melanie looked at Hannah in disbelief. “If that’s your idea of a joke, Hannah, you can do better.”
“I’m telling the truth, Mel; I’m really John!” pointing to Hannah, in his body, John said, “I found that book under the recliner in the family room. Hannah read something from it and we swapped bodies.”
Looking at who she thought was John, Melanie said, “Did you put her up to this, baby brother?”
John couldn’t help but glare at Melanie for that remark; not realizing how adorable it made him look in Hannah’s body - even though he was only 5 minutes younger than her, Melanie never missed an opportunity to remind him that she was older. Meanwhile, Hannah let out a sigh and said, “It’s the truth, Melanie; I’m the real Hannah.”
“Forgive me if I have a hard time believing you.” Gesturing to the book in her arms, Melanie said, “There are body swap spells in here, but Hannah’s too young to be able to use them.”
“I don’t know what to tell you, Mel.” Sighing, John said, “One minute I’m sitting on my bed, the next thing I know I’m laying on the floor in Hannah’s body.”
Melanie had to admit that if this was a prank, that John and Hannah were certainly committed to it. Placing the book down on John’s desk, Melanie said, “Let’s say, for a moment, that I believe what you two are saying.” Kneeling down to John’s level, Melanie said, “If you’re really John then you’ll be able to tell me what happened to Rachel Johnson at lunch today.”
Rachel Johnson was on the cheer squad with Megan, and she viewed Megan as her chief rival on the squad. John wasn’t sure what lead to the altercation in the lunchroom, but Rachel had approached their table with a bone to pick with Megan. It all happened so quickly that he barely had time to process what happened. Looking at Melanie, he said, “She slipped on a puddle split soda, bumped into another student’s lunch tray and fell to the floor with spaghetti all over her.”
John hoped that was enough to convince Melanie that they were telling the truth; although she might think that he’d told Hannah that story. To be honest, he probably would have if he hadn’t ended up in her body. With a flabbergasted look on her face, Melanie said, “John? That’s really you?”
“As strange as that sounds?” placing his hands on his waist, John said, “It’s really me in here.”
Suddenly Melanie burst out laughing; causing both John and Hannah to glare at her, which only made her laugh even harder. Once she finally stopped, Melanie said, “This is too funny.”
“I’m glad you think it’s funny, Mel.” Pouting, Hannah said, “You think I want to be an icky boy?”
“And I really don’t want to be my own little sister.” Looking at Melanie, John said, “You said there were body swap spells in that book; can’t you find one to undo this?”
“Undo what?”
Startled, everyone turned to find Mom standing in the doorway with a confused look on her face. With a weak smile, Melanie said,
“Hi, Mom.”
“Hello, Melanie.” Turning serious, Mom said, “Does someone care to explain what’s going on here?” indicates the next chapter needs to be written. |
