Haley, The Envious Sorority Member

Haley sighed as she let her curler go again. Another bouncy lock of hair lading on her shoulder. Looking into the mirror she saw her dirty blonde hair accent her otherwise unexceptional figure.

“Hey, pass that eyebrow pencil.” Adrienne, her roommate, asked. Haley let out an audible sigh and handed over the small pencil. “You’ve got to stop being so glum, girl,” Adrienne continued, applying the pencil to her face as she looked into the mirror, her pale, freckled, raven-haired face looking back. “You know you’re gonna be the president when we’re seniors, no need to rush into it.”

“It’s not just that though, you know Kelly gets off on how beautiful she is compared to us and how much control over everyone else she has just because of her looks.”

Adrienne paused, pencil still raised, to look hard at Haley. “You need to seriously chill, not everything is about looks.” Both girls paused for a beat, Haley’s eyes fell to the ground. “Is there something else going on? A guy or something?” Adrienne turned her whole body to face Haley.

Haley’s thoughts immediately went to Thomas, the guy that bitch Kelly started flirting with after Haley mentioned she liked him over her group text with the sorority.

“No, it’s...it’s nothing”

Feeling her phone buzz, Haley looked down at the screen, a small notification reading “Installation Complete”. She raised an eyebrow. Adrienne rolled her eyes and turned back to her mirror, continuing to apply her eyebrow pencil.

Haley saw a new gray box on her phone’s home screen. Feeling her curiosity get the better of her, she clicked into the app. A plain gray screen greeted her with a text entry field.

“Enter Your Command” was stated in the title above the flashing line.

Confused at what it could mean, Haley typed Help.

Feeling her phone vibrate again, another small window appeared on the app, simply titled “Readme”. Clicking in, she was greeted by a standard manual page of text, much like a downloaded program from the 2000’s.

“Greetings! If you're reading this then you’ve received my COMMAND App! It’ a simple program, designed to run on any phone in existence. I’ve sent it randomly to someone at this university to test out it’s capabilities, so congratulations! With this program you may enter any command you wish and it will come true. As simple as that. Please do try to keep in mind, the program will utilize the fabric of the universe to enable changes, so unless you want all of history to change too, make sure you state your intentions clearly. Anyway, you can probably figure out the rest yourself. Happy commanding!

-W”

Haley stared blankly at the instructions. The fabric of the universe? Rewrite history? None of this made any sense at all. She considered for a moment deleting it, since it was probably some sort of intricate virus or something, but hesitated. Maybe she should try typing something in...just to see if it was real.

Turning to her mirror, she looked at her face. Pretty, but she had yet to do her makeup for the party tonight. Shaking her head at what she was about to do, she typed into the device: My makeup was finished an hour ago.

A spark lept from her phone to her hand and she recoiled with a shout.

“What’s up over there?” Adrienne asked, her eyes focused on the mirror as she applied her eyelashes.

Haley looked at the phone with a mix of fear and shock, it’s screen glowing up from the ground where she dropped it.

“I uh…”

She trailed off mid sentence as her eyes met the mirror. Her face was done up in some of the best makeup she had done in her life. Lifting a finger to her face, she pressed it into her cheek to feel if it was real, then touching the mirror in front of her.

“I...I’m fine” she muttered, memories flickering into her head as she remembered coming home early from her softball game to apply her makeup for the party, using the extra time to try out some new techniques she had never done before.

She looked down at the phone, her eyes gleaming as she thought of the possibilities she could explore with this new power...
