For a marvel of science supposedly unmatched by anything every invented, you'd've expected a lot more. A tall building made entirely out of windows, some sort of holographic display on the front lawn, hovercrafts carrying things around, pneumatic tubes, or hell, maybe a celebrity endorsement, but nope. Nothing.
All it looked like was some usual corner store that'd been hollowed out and given a sign above saying "Hyperlife!" above the door. There wasn't even a crowd in sight, save for the city's usual traffic driving past.
A strange sight indeed, but hell, no lines!
As I crossed the street between me and the store I could see nobody inside save for a bald middle-aged man at the register, counting money. Part of me started thinking the place was closed, but sure enough, the door's bell rang freely as I pushed my way through and stepped inside, the man merely glancing up at me before going back to his work.
There were three aisles along the other half of the room, but most of them were empty, save for a few tall boxes peppered here and there. Guess there was a bit of a rush before...
My eyes scanned through whatever boxes remained, picking up all kinds of blobs of color inside upon the slim, plasticky figures within. They all looked like dolls, like I was walking through the girl's department of a toy store, but from all the talk going on they were anything but. But I'd never seen it go down with my own eyes. I'd heard all kinds of insane stories going around, but never once got to experience it face-to-face, and now it looked like my chance.
But one caught my on mere glance, and I stopped and backed up to face it once more. I leaned forward to observe the body's features; it had such a strong vibrance to it's form that it looked like a cartoon character lost within a live-action world, and seemed to look back as I met it's line of sight.
"So, what're you supposed to be?" I muttered as I took the box from the shelf and read off a square on its back.
