Vain as she could be, Arianne wasn't totally oblivious. The carriage, as expensively well maintained as it was, still rumbled as it moved, especially on the dirt roads between major settlements. So, when the rumbling stopped, Arianne's frowning began. She gave it a few moments to resume, but her patience could only stretch so much.
It's bad enough that I have to come home at all, she thought, if I have to leave my summer retreat I shouldn't have to tarry on the way to the palace.
"What is the delay?" She shouted, and she knocked on the wall of the carriage between her and the driver. She heard him scuffling away from his seat along its side. A second later, the door opened, and a flustered servant poked his head in.
"I-I'm sorry, Your Majesty, there's a--"
"Repent!" came a shout from behind him.
"... there's a disturbance, out on the road."
Arianne scoffed, and pushed her head out of the carriage, her driver almost slipping onto the road as she brushed him aside. She glanced to the front of her ride, and glared at the lone figure standing there. Arianne had seen mages before, of course, with her parents having a handful of court wizards. Of course, she wasn't so knowledgeable to identify the figure standing before her, or why she should have taken a kinder tone...
