Meldona stood at the edge of the jungle. Beyond this a small clearing. From there rose the temple, a dark and ancient structure. She scanned the temple. There were great stairs leading up to the entrance, a large opening. In front of it stood two guards. On each side they stood, looking down out over the jungle. She studied them. Your normal savages, wearing loincloths, carrying spears of wood and stone. No threat to a mage of her caliber. Besides, they wouldn't even see her!
So, Meldona left her hiding spot, and marched brazenly towards the entrance of the temple. She walked carefully and quietly, yet made no effort to hide. What did she have to fear? She was invisible for the next 20 minutes! As long as she did not foolishly make a ruckus they would not hear her coming.
To Meldona's shock, she walked about twenty paces and both men turned to look at her. She froze. Had see been heard. No, they were looking right at her! And that was when she saw it. Around each of their necks they wore a ward stone. A powerful item which prevented any enchantment or mystical deceit. How had these savages gotten their hands on such powerful magics! Her invisibility was useless!
One of the men raised a horn to his lips. Before Meldona could react he blew a loud bellow which echoed through the jungle. For a second all was still. then, To Meldona's shock, warriors emerged from the jungle. Spear carrying men, all coming straight at her. In a second she was encircled by a sea of spear-points. She'd been caught like an amateur, not even making it to the temple and it's treasures!
