The darkness below

She plummeted through the air, a cold wind rushing past her. Beside her she caught a glimpse of Steven, his arms above his head, mouth open in a furious scream that hit dead ears. On and on they went. Above them the cliff top disappeared, leaving behind whatever was up there. Yet they didn't know what they fell into. On and on and on. Perpetual darkness surrounded them, a cold ice licked at her skin and then finally, it was almost over.

A blinding white light filled the ground beneath them getting starker with every inch closer they got. Laura screamed and squeezed her eyes shut.

They landed with a dull thump, her body falling deep into something so cold she thought her legs might fall off. Her eyes popped open and she saw that they had landed in the biggest embankment of snow she had ever seen.

"Where are we?" Steven asked. Flakes of frost settled in his hair.

"I don't know." Laura shook her head. Never before had she seen so much snow. Was it even possible that so much cold existed in the world.

"I think we need to get out of here and find some shelter."

Laura nodded. Her teeth chattered. Steven was right. They couldn't stay there for long otherwise they would get hypothermia. "Come on."

She wiggled her toes, shifting her legs as much as she could, heaving at the snow with her clawed hands at the same time. Finally she dragged herself from the snow, a flower reclaiming life. Her hands were red raw and her teeth clacked together a mile a minute. They had to move. Rushing across, she grabbed Steven's hand and with all the energy she had left, she pulled him from his own gorge in the snow.

Standing up he dusted himself off. "Thanks."

"You're welcome."

"Now which way do we go?"

The pair looked across the snowy embankment and they saw...
