buried itself under the leaves

It had the properties of the creatures it had killed and absorbed over the years. It could camouflage into any setting. Once it had been a white tipped wave on a beach before it turned itself into a tsunami and killed hundreds of people. Another time it turned itself into the jello served to the blind worshippers at Jones town. Because it really wasn't of this world, it could go from one age and time to another, one world to another. It forgot how old it was, but it had seen stars born and stars die, and today's hunting was child's play.
It was hungry but didn't know how to slate its hunger anymore. The shadow beast didn't really eat its prey, it more or less absorbed it. But it wanted, no it needed, something different. It wanted innocence.
Innocence was coming.
Od came around the corner. Something didn't smell right. What could it be? What was wrong? The area looked the same except the birds weren't singing and the plants themselves almost seemed like statues. He listened carefully. He heard:
