A sudden noise disturbs proceedings.

My brother and I sat at his wrinkly feet, hanging on his every word. His voice was deep, not thin and reedy as you would expect such an old man's voice to be. His beard, thick and full, hung in a silvery curtain with a floor-brushing hem. His lips were invisible beneath the hair, but the few teeth he had remaining were visible as he spoke.
"My young ones," he said, "listen well and you were learn of many things. Things that will serve you well as you walk through this world."
My skin goose pimpled in anticipation. What wondrous pearls of wisdom were about to fall from those nonexistent lips? My brother, biting his lip, eyes wide open, leaned forward and...

The deepest, loudest rumble shook the oak tree, sending us tumbling to the entrance. We poked our heads' out, stacked one of top of the other. The Wizard's beard hung over my face, and when I parted that curtain, I was stunned by what I saw.

An enormous dragon, resplendent and sinuous, stood before our astonished eyes. It roared again, shaking the tree until we all fell out in a heap, our teeth rattling in our heads.

We untangled ourselves slowly, so as to break the fragile bones of the Wizard, under the watchful eye of the burgundy and gold dragon. The Wizard was the first to speak.
He knelt on creaky knees. "Greetings, old one. It has been too long." The dragon yawned, emitting puffs of curling smoke that rose into the sky.
"Yes, Wizard. I wish I were here with glad tidings." His golden eyes held unfathomable depths of sorrow, and I shivered involuntarily as he continued his tale of woe.
