The cave was dank, humid, and it stunk. The irregular ground was covered in wolf scat, making an already slippery surface even more slippery.
No one knew how many wolves lived in the cave. But cave was a misnomer. Lair was the word that better described where the wolves lived.
But then Sabrina pranced out of the lair, her dark eyes shone like black marbles as the sun reflected from them. Her paws, small but hiding powerful claws, grasped the wet, dank rock as sure footed as any animal that ever lived.
As her dark gaze scanned her surroundings, Sabrina hunted for the fairy princess Celine. But Sabrina knew that the princess of fairies lived high in the canopy. Turning her gaze skyward, Sabrina tried to locate Celine. She would befriend Celine, given the chance, but only to serve her own purposes.
Sabrina shook of last night's dew and took a few tentative steps out into the verdant field. She looked around at all the surrounding beauty. There were the beautiful and mighty oak trees. Their roots spread twice as far as their widest branches, she had been told. And then there were the streams, brooks, babbling and non-babbling, as well as the rivers with their swirling, twirling waters. Sabrina loved it all. But she most loved that so many other wolves were at her back and call.
Yes, she told herself, there were definite benefits to being the queen of the lair. Isn't it wonderful, she asked herself, that because she was queen she could get a hairstyle without waiting in line. And wasn't it wonderful that she didn't need dinner reservations at any of the popular restaurants. All she had to do was show up and she would be shown to the best table in the restaurant. Yes, she told herself, being queen had its advantages.
"Life is good," Sabrina shouted and listened to her words echo across the glen. "Yes," she mumbled to no one in particular, "Being queen was definitely more beneficial than being one of the worker wolves, the ones who got their paws dirty hunting for fresh gazelle, hyena, or the occasional elephant.
Sabrina yawned with a feminine groan. "I should prepare myself for my morning nap."
"But you just woke up, Princess Sabrina," Maurine said. "The canopy fairies are going to think you're lazy."
Sabrina gaze a short wave of her hand. "Let them think what they will," Sabrina said. "I don't have to answer to any of them."
"That's true, Sabrina," Maurine said. "But you know, appearances are important."
"Appearances?" Sabrina said, shocked. "I don't have any appearances."
Maurine shook her head, and said, "Maybe you should go lie down, after all."
"Yes, I think you're right," Sabrina said and headed back inside the wolf lair.
