Something else.

The lights followed Steven and Laura, staying back far enough so the they could not be seen. They hovered over the ground, bunching up when the stopped to because they got too close to Steven and Laura. But as soon as the distance opened, the lights moved forward, creating a long line of glowing green light like an emerald necklace.
"Steven," Laura turned around to say something to Steven, but suddenly stopped, her eyes locked on the deep darkness of the forest. "There!" she shouted and pointed. Steven turned around and stared.
The lights blinked out, but not before Steven and Laura had seen them.
"Oh, my God," Laura said, fear constricting her voice. "I told you there was someone out there." She stepped forward so that she was hidden behind her brother's back. She peered around his shoulder and stared at the light.
"I may be wrong," Steven said slowly, "but they may actually be something that will help us."
"Help us? Have you lost your mind, Steven?" Laura tucked her head behind Steven again so that she was completely hidden from the view of the lights. "They are definitely not human."
"If I'm right," Steven said, "and I think I am, they used to be human."
"Now I'm really worried about your state of mind, Steven," Laura said, her voice shaky. "I knew I should have just turned back even if Steve didn't want to," Laura mumbled to herself.
"Wait, one is coming over," Steven said. He could feel Laura's hands grasp his upper arms and yelped when her nails dug into his flesh. "Ouch," Steven said, his voice whiney. "That hurts, Laura. Ease up."
"I'm scared, Steven." Laura peered over her brother's shoulder and with one eye she followed the green glowing light as it slowly made its way to where she and Steven stood as still as statues.
"Shh," Steven admonished. "Let me do the talking, okay sis?"
"I won't argue that, Steven," Laura said. "I'm finding it hard to talk to you, I probably couldn't talk to the light even if I wanted to."
The glow cast a sickly green glow over Steven's face as it came to within a few inches of Steven's face. There was a low hum emitting from the small light that changed in volume in a definite rhythm. Louder, quieter, quieter still, then lower, quieter, and then low again, but moving louder and holding the volume for a moment before going quiet. It was a tune that Steven recognized, but he couldn't place it. It must be my nerves, he told himself. But he definitely knew the tune, and given time he would remember it.
His eyes locked on the glowing light, and he tried to stop his body from shaking. The light hovered in front of Steven for a moment later, and then moved back away.
"Who are you?" Steven asked, his voice soft and tentative.
"Don't antagonize them," Laura whispered from behind her brother's back.
"I'm not antagonizing anybody, Laura," Steven said. "I just think it would be a good idea to try to communicate with them. If they are who I think they are, then they might be able to assist us."
Laura's head slowly rose above Steven's shoulders until her eyes were not only visible, but also reflecting the green glow of whatever it was hovering in front of her. As she gazed at it, the hum began to form into a rhythm again, and it's volume rose and fell.
"I recognize that tune, Steven," Laura said. "Maybe it is trying to communicate with us."
"I'm glad you finally came to your senses, Laura," Steven said. "I once heard of a group of people who had moved into the woods somewhere around here."
"What does that have to do with what we're confronting now?" Laura asked.
"Maybe nothing," Steven said slowly. "Maybe everything." He took a step closer to the glowing light.
"What... what are you doing," Laura asked and shuffled forward too so that she remained hidden behind Steven.
"Shhh," Steven replied. Instead of answering Laura's question, Steven reached out with his forefinger and slowly moved it toward the light. His finger began to glow green as it neared the light, and Steven could feel the skin of his finger warm. A feeling of friendliness, kindness, serenity, came over him, and a smile slowly stretched his lips.
"Who are you?" Steven asked.
"What?" Laura said quickly. "You know who I am."
"I don't mean you, knuckle head," Steven said. "I'm talking to the glowing light. He could feel Laura press herself tighter against his back, as if she was trying to hide inside of him instead of behind him. "Take it easy, Laura," Steven said back over his shoulder. "I have this under control."
Steven turned around again and raised his finger until it was nearly touching the light. He took a quick glance over his shoulder as if to say something to Laura, but instead of speaking, her turned back to the light.
"Who are you?" he asked, his voice just above a whisper. "have you come to help us?"
The light flickered, the volume of its hum increased as it a vibration had increased.
"Laura, look," Steven said back over his shoulder. "I think it's trying to communicate with me." With a big smile stretching his lips, Steven continued speaking. "I think I know a way to communicate back." Steven turned back to the light.
Steven paused as if trying to find the right words, but when he raised his arm straight out from his side and opened his palm, it was obvious that he had something else in mind.
"Um, um, um, ummm," Steven hummed as he opened and closed his fist with the rhythm of his humming. But there was no response from the light. Steven did it again, but using a different tune this time.
"Ummmm, um, ummm. um. um. um. ummmm," and again with each hum, Steven's fist opened and closed. Steven let his arm fall to his side as he gazed silently into the light. Suddenly, the light grew brighter.
The light's vibration of sound repeated the same tune Steven had just hummed. Steven's mouth fell open as he watched the light's glow become brighter and duller, brighter and duller, with each different tone it emitted.
"This is great, Laura," he said, his voice now filled with excitement.
"I think these things are aliens from another planet," Laura said. "Don't trust them, Steven. You don't know why they are here or what they are capable of.
"Don't be silly," Steven admonished his sister. "If they wanted to harm us they would have done that already. Right?"
"You are asking me to be intelligent, logical, and fearless as we find ourselves in a dangerous, stupid, and illogical situation.
But Steven wasn't listening. Instead, he raised his arm out to his side again and held his hand flat, his palm facing the light.
"I'm going to ask him another question, Laura. Let's see what we can find out."
As he began to hum like he had done before, the light grew intense, brighter than it had been before. Steven assumed the light had suddenly become afraid of something, because is back away a couple of feet and it was joined by a number of other lights that had been hovering in the near distance. As they merged together, it was as if a large light had suddenly appeared out of the darkness.
"Oh, sh....." Steven's voice trailed off as the group of lights began humming and vibrating.
