Our old King was killed last evening. We collected at the beheading site, as everyone did, to observe the tragedy. Why we go and watch these dreadful sights, I know not. We are told if we are not there, there will be five years of hardship for our family - so we are there under duress. I do not want my children seeing such atrocities. I have brought them up to be kind to their fellow man. It's a sorry reality that our royalty do not share the same morals.
The palace courtyard was heaving with fellow, scared souls. Other families here to see their King murdered. I believe it is murder. The battle over who should reign over us continues like a flowing river - there are dams, there are times of flood and drought, yet somehow it never ends. They do not care the lengths they go to. If they gain blood on their hands on their way to the throne, it seems to heighten their power. I would much rather live my simple life away from it all!
We live by their dictate whoever leads us. It makes no impact. The new King will still demand high taxes from his people. He will still demand percentages of our crops - and still demand our first born son travels to the palace to become a guard of the King. It is their power over us, and we feel it squeezing our necks every day.
Our first born son has to leave for the palace, the new royal family, and the new King, at first light. As the sun rises, his mother, my treasured wife, will have tears in her eyes as he leaves to be a soldier-guard. He will risk his life from the moment he steps out of our village. Objectors of the King lie in wait. They know that hundreds of young men from across this valley will soon be their enemies. If they can murder our sons before they reach the palace -they will be one step nearer to killing the new King.
We are not celebrating the new King. We are not mourning the old King. We cannot let these views be known All my wife and I are concerned with is - the loss of our son. We know he will not return.
