Flying dragons

The doe eyed cows gazed placidly at him. Aris shook himself free of the musing. Good grief man, get a grip. It is mad to be imagine the thoughts of cows while I seek a better place.

"What are ye think'n o Captain?" asked Jared, looking at Aris appraisingly.

Aris stared hard ahead and muttered, "You wouldn't believe me if I told you."

Jared laughed, "Oh I might. I like to think of girls I've known, to tell the truth."

Aris blushed, "Well it was nothing like that."

Jared laughed the harder, "You're right," the older man punched him in the shoulder, "I don't believe you."

"What do you make of that smear, there," Aris pointed at the horizon. "I see it rising, now for the last few minutes and I can't tell if it is cloud, or army, or fire."

Jared squinted hard, "I hardly see a thing. Your eyes are better than mine. Younger."

"Likely its nothing, but considering the times it could be an army to join," Aris frowned, "or one we best avoid. . ."

"What should we do then?" Jared asked the captain who seemed transfixed by what he was trying to see in the distance. He seemed near as dazed as he had before, thinking of women, but this was different. "I could set out some outriders forward. If its trouble we should know of it afore it knows aught of us I'm think'n. Aris?"

"Those are dragons," spit Aris, suddenly sure of himself.

"Don't be daft. . ."

"Dragons, winging this way too. Get the men off the road and into whatever cover they can find," Aris ordered. "Off the road and hidden!" he shouted and turning his horse back along the line of march spurred his mount to a gallop shouting for everyone to get out of his way, off the road, and under cover.

Jared turned his horse to follow the captain, but before he followed he looked where Aris had fixed his eyes and saw them too, dark-winged shapes like no bird he'd ever seen and he knew them for what they were. "DRAGONS!" he roared, "Get your asses off the road. Dragons damn ye!"
