"I don't think I can go back, Steven." Laura shook her head as she glanced at the trees behind her. In the pitch black night, the leaves rustled together in the darkness and the wind whistled through the branches but beneath that she heard something else. Something that sent shivers down her spine. It sounded almost as if the trees were being pulled up from the ground by their very roots, tearing the earth to shreds. They began tipping, creating a domino effect.
"We're going to have to go back, Laura." Steven shook his head. "There's no way we can..." He turned to look at the forest. Trees were crashing to the earth sending vibrations through the ground. The domino was moving swiftly toward them.
"Steven..."
"What in the?"
"Steven we have to go."
"But--"
"Now!"
Without waiting for another word, Laura pelted to the end of the cliff. Against everything her body screamed at her not to do, she pushed herself backwards off the cliff, belly scraping the rough woodland ground. Her feet dangled on the other side, looking for purchase as they screamed in anxiety. Her mind wheeled and her hands grabbed onto anything she could catch hold of. It wasn't long before Steven did the same, his body hanging off the edge of the cliff next to her.
"Ready?" He glanced down as the next tree landed just inches from where their fingers clawed the earth.
"What?"
"We have to jump."
"What in the--"
"Now!"
